I took a long look at things yesterday and came down to 2 choices- replace the trans or replace the truck. My current truck (f150) has 185k miles. Engine and radiator have 25k. Trans is original. The dash is cracked, paint faded and needs tires soon. I figure 3k for all this. My boss has a 2001 GMC 2500 CC with the 6.0 loaded (leather, wood grain etc) with only 65k miles on it. It needs tires but otherwise immaculate and well maintained. Can get it for 8-9k. Thoughts? I am leaning toward new trans, but not 100% yet.
How is the body on your truck, is it starting to rust?
I'd be leaning towards doing the transmission.
It may be in your plans already, but be sure to at least check that the stock (if it has one ?) transmission cooler is not blocked or restricted internally. Better yet, I'd just install a higher capacity stacked plate transmission cooler - they're not much money, esp. down your way (vs. Canada).

Depends on the amount you drive. My 6.0 Chevy gets 12 mpg on a good day, empty, down hill, with a tail wind. Sounds like a fair deal, but fuel might kill you.

I get 15-16 in the ford now. I have read that the 6.0 is not easy on gas, but an upside is these motors tend to go a while. With low mileage, I figure I can get 4-5 years at 25k a year out of it. There will be no financing, everything is based on cash. Here are a couple pics of the F150.

Its a 13 year old truck so buying your bosses 01 will put you back in the same situation soon.
Fix the one you have or bite the bullet and buy new or 2 to 3 years old.

Fixing the F-150's trans is going to be around $3,000. If you would fix it I recommend you only get a trans from the dealer because they will back up their trans. If you have any problems with it you take it in and they will fix it. If you take the $3k the trans will cost plus what you can get for the F-150 as it sits you will be hallways or more there on the price of the Chevy.
I am not a big Chevy fan but I think I would go with the Chevy. The price sounds pretty good to me. If it has been well maintained it should run along time. I would do a transfer case pump upgrade to it. These trucks have a anti rattle clip that breaks and put a hole in the transfer case and the fluid leaks out. Most of the time you don't know it til it's to late. GasTruck
