My 5 horse Baldor 1725 rpm above runs at 22 amps, startup is around 50. half again that would be run @ 33 amps, start at 75.

Breakers are heat devices, so startup amps higher than rating won't trip them. That 7.5 horse should work fine on a 50 amp 240 volt breaker... Steve

They can also trip in a non-thermal mode with a severe overload. I think they have a magnetic component to them as well at the thermal part.

If you like IR products (which they are usually very good) check out the "type 30" compressors. While I don't have direct experience with them, I have seen them raved about, and they are probably the first place I will look when my compressor dies.

Typical (from what I have seen) 'box store - cheaper' pumps run at around 1100-1150 RPM. The Quincy's and other 'good' designs run at around 950rpms on the bigger ones. The motors are typically also 1750-1800rpm models instead of the 3450-3600rpm models used on the cheaper ones. The slower ones have more torque and give much more 'umph' than the higher rpm ones that use speed instead. Its like diesel vs. gas in trucks. But, it does usually mean more inrush current on startup...

I bought a Mighty Mule dual gate opener from TSC for $599.00 at the local store.
33 days later there is an ad on this website for the same opener for $499.00 at TSC !!!
I sent TSC an email complaining and got email back that it was over 30 days and they didn't price match with internet!
So their attitude is- We got your money, too bad so sad!

If you find ANYTHING at TSC shop around before you pay too much!

80gal is a lot of storage. ??? The Quincy is 60gal but has the heavy duty motor at $1499.00. It's a tough call.
I'm running a Kellogg/American 5hp 2stage on a 30 gal tank in my business shop. It's about 40 years old and I bought it used about 25 years ago!!
I have a spare 80 gal tank if I need more storage but I haven't opened the valve to use it in years.

I'm curious about how efficiency plays in here as well. Saving a few cents per tank over 20 or 30 years could also make up the difference. Anyone have any knowledge of this?

I have the IR compressor you are thinking about and it is great fr my uses. About a year into owning it I noticed a rust spot under the paint. I called the company and, long story short, they were out the next day to install a new tank. They started my warranty from zero again and that was the end of it. Mine supplies all the air I need for a large hobbyist shop and I'm glad I own it.

I purchased two compressors via this method and saved considerable coin...

I bought that same compressor awhile back. I have it on a 60-AMP breaker, starts and runs fine. Really quiet running compressor. :cool2:
