I am looking at this air compressor at Tractor Supply - Ingersol 2-stage

Heres the Quincy version of the TS4N5 you're looking at. Notice that while it cost 2x as much, the warranty is much longer, the CFM's are more, and the pump RPM's are lower than the IR.

FREE SHIPPING — Quincy Compressor Reciprocating Air Compressor — 5 HP, 230 Volt Single Phase, Model# 251CS80VCB | 19 CFM Below Air Compressors| Northern Tool + Equipment

Not to mention the design life is more than 3x that of the IR. The 60gal Quincy I linked to earlier is actually a closer match to the IR TS4N5 in term of specs, and still has 2x the warranty and design life..

What model would that be in a 60 gal version?

I agree the rated lifespan is 3X. I cannot find the pump rpm number published. I suspect it is just a bit higher than the Quincy, judging by the same horsepower and the CFM just slightly less. Now I really wonder what the rated lifespan of my single stage Puma was. That one still runs but is 25 years old.

The advertised lifespan of the IR is "15,000 plus hours".

I used to own a sign company doing sandblasted signs, and after going through a couple of the "box store" compressors, I ponied up for a 15 horse Quincy, and ran it nonstop for 15 years. Sandblasting is tougher on a compressor than anything else you'll throw at it. If your use is just for a home shop, those type units are fine, but for anything commercial, go with a unit designed for true continual duty. BTW, the Quincy's are a true pressure lubricated compressor.

I have 2 of the IR 60 gallon 230volt single stage units built in the early 1980s still both going strong, neither have needed anything other than oil changes and air filter cleaning, and they ARE rated for continuous duty.

They will probably out live me but the 3500+ RPM does get old... If you can afford the Quincy, I would go for it. For the difference in noise if nothing else, But there is nothing wrong with the Ingersols for most small shops...

Jim, I know it's painful to spend over double the price for anything, but IMO unless your hearing is already gone and/or you have a separate building for your compressor, I would stay away from physically small motors on compressors - that size motor (which they are very silent about the RPM) is going to be a 3450 rpm motor in order to develop anywhere near 5 horsepower.

The Quincy, DevAir, etc, machines use either a Leeson or Baldor, 1=1/8" shaft, 1725 RPM motor and bigger pistons/slower pump. This makes them quieter and more durable, with higher CFM typically.

I have a DevAir 5/80, paid $1850 about 4 years ago, now they're around $2700 - it is quiet enough you can stand right beside it and carry on a conversation without raising your voice. It is the model TAPV-5052, here's the brochure.

Quincy models will be similarly priced and performance, both have been around a long time. The above-linked Quincy pump runs faster than my DevAir and produces less CFM, but has the same Baldor REAL 5 horse motor mine has - just the motor on mine weighs right at 90 pounds.

It's your money, but I too would stay away from "box store" products with the usage you mentioned... Steve

Can you really get 7.5 hp on a single phase line? How many amps would that pull on startup?
I bought that same compressor awhile back. I have it on a 60-AMP breaker, starts and runs fine. Really quiet running compressor. :cool2:
