I prefer the Premium Blue extreme or the T6 over the Premium Blue heavy duty. I'll spend a little more to run a full synthetic oil because of the cold climate. I'm currently running T6 simply because it's easy to get.

Now that we have a TSC locally, I run Premium Blue. Just wondered if T6 being a universal formula (gas/diesel) if it weakened the formula any!!

Hi Will,

While the Marketeers (Mouseketeers ?) at Valvoline are not pushing the Extreme as a "Fleet" oil, it seems to have an SM rating, so it's not really much different than T6 in that sense.

If you want to know about specific additive levels check the Virgin Oil Analysis section on Bob is the Oil guy.com , esp. if the oil company is not releasing that info directly. And, the BITOGers pay to run their own tests anyway - "Show Me !".

Valvoline seems tighter with Cummins than Shell, but that may just be a reflection of a domestic business relationship more so than absolute performance.

As long as the Cummins oil spec is met, IMO you'd be fine with either, when changed at the factory intervals.

Down here the local TSC only sells Premium Blue HD, not the synthetic PB Extreme. The price is the same as Rotella T Tripple. It could be just me but I like the synthetics for the dead of winter starting in high compression diesels.

Thanks Chris!!

Do you have any diesel trucks running Premium Blue 5W40 year round?
Looking at a Ram Cummins for my next truck!!

my 04 f250 6.0psd, my 99 f350 7.3psd, and my 99 f450 7.3psd run valvoline premium blue full syn 5w40 year round.

the 450 had been on amsoil it's entire life when i got it, and I swapped it over to t he valvoline.
.. so it has run full syn since just after rolling off the line. I guess it's 'shipping oil' was dino..

the 350 has been on it since i owned it.. i guess 4 ys?? now No issues... no leaks.. etc.

the 250 had been on the motorcraft psd 15w40 it's entire life from new, and i swapped it over to the blue about 2ys ago. While probably not related i had been having a turbo underboost error pop up now and then and within 2 weeks of the syn oil switch it has never done it again. coincidence? maybee.. maybee not.

I plan on keeping all 3 on it as long as it is out and i can afford it. :)

Can't really go wrong with either.

T6 is good stuff. It's built a solid reputation over on BITOG for good reason.

I don't think you can go wrong with either of the 2 synthetics mentioned. T6 performed well for me in my cummins. I'm sure that prem. blue syn. would have performed just as well

There are 2 oils labeled Premium Blue. the first is a dino oil 15w-40 labeled as Premium Blue. the second is Premium Blue EXTREME and is a synthetic 5w-40. the Premium Blue Extreme is comparable to the Rotella T6, not the Premium Blue.
