There are about 4 oil filter mfg. FRAM-- WIX-- FLEETGUARD-- PUREALATOR. Chances are you are running one of the four. All sub-brands are from the big four. Look on line and you can cross reference most filters to one of your choice. EXAMPLE NEW HOLLAND BOOMER 50 (2012) oil> NH/ MT40006977--FRAM/ 3593A-- WIX/51064--etc. You can cross ref hyd oil filters, fuel, and air. All on same web sites. I own 10 tractors and go to local auto parts store with old filter and match gasket, hole size and length. THANKS FOR READING <RS>

You said you wondered how many oil filter failures happen. If you can shake the filter and the element rattles it is allowing oil to bypass, I think that would be a failure.

I really wonder if you even need an oil filter if you are one of those who still does the 3000 mile change. I had always head the main problem is the used oil that remains in the filter. After a motor is broken in, most oil filters I have cut open looked pretty clean. Cars have not always had oil filters. I would be interested in some data on that if there is any. I can see the benefit if you stretch out the time or mileage longer.

i got a murray lawn mower that is going on 16ys hard use in florida heat with no oil filter. it's getting a break now as I just bought a new ride though.... and it has an oil filter. almost bigger than my gmc yukon's filter!

Those OLD B&S engines were tough. I doubt the newer ones will hold up that long. I had a MTD for about 20 yrs that saw heavy use. Still running strong (smoked a little) on the same old MTD frame when I gave it to my cousin in Mississippi last summer. I up graded to a Toro Zero turn

the old murry runs like new.. the deck is beat. I have rebuilt it 3x now ( deck )... I am keeping it as .. as you say.. i thinkt he new brigs won't last as long. it sounds different. same displacement.. etc.
I may have to swap the old engine on in 10 ys..

I love everybody telling me that WIX and NAPA filters are so great, they cannot even get the right cross for the Kubota BX fuel filter.
The Kubota one is an inline filter with treated paper that blocks water, the WIX/ NAPA 33973/ 3972 is nothing more than a 50 micron screen in a plastic container, how am I going to know if their oil filter they cross for is one really made for the diesel engine or just the motorcycle one that is the same size and threads but only half a filter inside the can as many of the other crosses are for the same application.
Both my Kubota dealer and my tractor parts dealer for the Massey can get very close or sometimes beat the prices that the NAPA shop charges for their filters and I am not worried about how close or far away the specs of their "will fit" and OEM filters are. You should of seen what the owner of NAPA did when the other parts house in town became an Oreilly's first bad mouthed and raised a stink about being the only one locally owned and then sold out a year later to the larger chain of NAPA franchises . NAPA DOES NOT MEAN A BETTER DEAL

Agreed!! I will pay a few dollars more for an OEM filter. Wix and napa mean nothing to me, but my mucho expensive tractor does.

OEM isn't always the better option. The Baldwin fuel filter in my Cummins has a better micron rating than the OEM. The Fleet guard oil filter is better than the OEM. To buy OEM just because it's OEM ?? No thanks !

Sometimes there are better filters that are not OEM but OEM is never the WRONG filter that someone decided is a "will fit".
When it comes to the filters on the Hydro transmissions there have been several cases where aftermarket filters have caused problems. When I got my BX I looked at several crosses and stumbled upon one website where there was a guy doing reviews and learned that one part number was used on a lot of motorcycles and he had cut them apart and not all the filters had a full sized element inside the can and half were just air. That was when I stopped using crosses, it was not worth the $3000 replacement engine cost.
