I have a wood stove and my pipe is straight up. I was under the impression that there isn't any danger of a creosote fire in my chimney. I know that once it gets really cold out the fire will get hotter, and I'm unsure if the thermometer is accurate or not. I just got it so we could have a number to base how much wood we use.

Was that your logger whose truck rolled in the Pizza Hut? That was sad.
Yup, Mike Morin. He was a great guy, felt like a member of the family. Still sad for Mike and think of him every time I move some wood.

Do you have a infrared thermometer you could check to verify the the thermometer is right?

Yep, at 200 you are building creosote. Those themo's can be off quite a bit. If you have an IR thermo you can double check the readings. My initial flue temps run high 5's & low 6's, then settle down to low 5's & upper 4's. Even at those temps if your wood is not completely dry(a year or better under cover), you will still build creosote. I get about a half a quart each time I sweep in early Feb, then again at the end of the season.

Eddie, if you don't have one, pick up a Sooteater. If you have access to your flue through the stove you can clean it from the bottom up using a cordless drill.

Use only dry wood, inspect or sweep at least once a year. Dry flaky stuff stuck in the chimney is not bad, black crusted stuff is. Remember, once creosote starts to burn it can reach 2,000 degrees and melt a steel flue if there is enough build up.

One more thing, they are kinda pricey, but I have a similar set up to this. Since my stove is in the basement I wanted to be able to read real time flue temps on the main floor. The alarm is set to go off at 900 degrees.

An over fire can happen for many reasons, most are operator error. like trying to load during full burn, leaving the door open, leaving a primary air inlet open too much...etc.

The local VFD gets a couple chimney fire calls every year even in our little town. Red-orange flames and black smoke rolling out of a chimney is not a good thing.

Yeah, the 3520 had no issues with the load. I would have to guess they hold 1/2 a face cord tossed in like that.

For my 3520, I have added lots of rear liquid tire ballast, as well as wheel spacers to make it stable while lifting.

I haven't done any seasoning in the bins, but I don't swee why I couldn't.

So I did the infrared thermometer test... the magnet metal thermometer was off by a hundred degrees - reading higher.

I placed the metal thermometer just on the cast iron section of the stove before the pipe, waited for a bit, took an infrared thermometer reading and it matched within 10-20 degrees. Tried different subtle locations for about a half hour before being satisfied.

I had it on the pipe after the elbow, up about 18". It was not over the stove - the stove resides out side the fireplace cavity - and the pipe/liner(stainless steel) is inside the old massive chimney.

I guess I just assumed the pipe would be the correct place for it.
