It's a lot more complicated than that, which may be why "gun nut" bothers?

Hunting nut. Fishing nut. NFL nut. Racing nut. Sports nut (in general). Gardening nut. Tractor nut. Travel nut. Birding nut. Nothing pejorative in those descriptions.

I really have no problem with the term "gun nut", in and of itself, but when you consider that it is a combination of the two words "gun" and "nut", both of which have some very negative connotations, and add in a very broad negative, ujust and unflattering generalization about "gun nuts", then I admit that I am a bit bothered. That's why I think the term "nuts with guns" is more apropos in the context you used the term and the negative characteristics you attribute to it.

Around here the farmers are using them to check cattle and crops.

Oklahoma Farmers Use Drones To Monitor Crops, Cattle - News9.com - Oklahoma City, OK - News, Weather, Video and Sports |

In an exclusive statement to News 9, the FAA clarified the issue, stating:
"Farmers may operate an unmanned aircraft over their own property for personal use and Guidelines for the operation of model aircraft, such as those published by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, may be used by farmers as reference for safe model UAS operations."
One priority guideline from the AMA... "(c) Not fly higher than approximately 400 feet above ground level within three (3) miles of an airport without notifying the airport operator."
"System are much smaller, and has the capability to sense where his crops need to be watered," said Retired Major General Toney Stricklin.
Retired Major General of the US Army and member of the Oklahoma Unmanned Aircraft Council Toney Stricklin knows the difference between military and commercial drones, and feels farming is just the beginning.
"I Like to say the genie is out of the bottle. This technology will continue to grow in public safety and agriculture," Stricklin said.
It really is just the beginning. General Stricklin estimates in the next 20 years, UAS will be a multi-billion dollar industry.

I'm fine with that. :)

I'm not fine with the passions of some "gun nuts" feeding the psychosis of "a nut with a gun" and pretending the relationship does not exist. Humans are and always have been fascinated with death. That fascination extends to that which can cause death, or putting the power of bringing about, or preventing/ameliorating, death within our control. Ergo, [F]aith.

It's pointless to deny human nature.

If you live near water you might want to watch out for this 1/20 ADMIRAL GRAF SPEE MODEL or maybe a U-Boat.

Not a drone, but I'm reading stories about local law inforcement/sheriffs receiving hand-me-downs from the Af-gain draw down and like my county that can't afford to run school buses are far short to operate this expensive and very heavy equipment. Don't see the need for 16 ton armered trucks or drones.

Awesome. I live on a lake, I need one of these :D

I have planes over my house all the time (under a landing pattern for an air-force base). They pretty tightly regulate the area, though there are plenty of private aviation pilots too (sometimes I'm one of them). I never really cared much one way or another... not sure I'd care about a drone either. That's what trees are for and if they want to spy on my walking the dog in my skivvies that's their problem not mine. What would scare the crap out of me is an armed drone... but so far I don't think they use those in the US.

I see all kinds of mindless drones in government offices and agencies. They trade their conscience and common sense for their personal security.
Ok that's kinda funny. I haven't seen one fly yet.
Don't get me wrong, i work for a gov. agency as a government worker for many years but still, and always will, get aggravated with lazy, it's not my money attitudes and i take that opportunity to make myself understood that it's not gonna fly with me. Oh and that sense of personal security is a dream too. I've seen whole segments get outsourced.

That is really cool. It would be even better if the guns fired! One way to take care of bad behaving Jet Skiers!

Later,
Dan
Or beavers!
