Want a new laptop but do I want Windows 8?

yep.. mine ws preinstalled 8. so i hope it is easy. I hate computers these days.

now.. when i downloaded ie11 at work for the guy int he back office on a w7 machine.. i went thru ms download site.. not the app store.

that one had the option of run or save.. and save is the only one that worked.

i needed to get 8.1 and ie 11 for this new machine as it had 10.. the app store said get 8.1 and 11.. yada yada.. 3.2g downlaod.

so we will see.

i may be back tonight at 10:15 pm asking how to fix the wifes *^^$# computer..

IE11 comes with the W8.1..

Again, I'm the OP and everything is going fine with the new computer. It will work for me.

It came with 30 days of Norton but when I tried to insert my purchased Norton disc I used with my other computer, the screen said that the version of Norton did not work with Windows 8. Well, the box says it does and I installed it on Windows 7 so what's the big deal.

Either I figure it out in the 0 days or I'm going to Kaspersky as others here have suggested.

Any ideas?

I'm sure that is fine for your work but it depends on the type of work.
i.e. My wife was a microbiologist for 40 years and everyone had to protect their work results and patient's data so every entry into the computer system was password protected, documented and routinely checked to be sure someone without "the need to know" was not in there fishing.
The health system being forced on us now does not have that security.
Passwords and entry codes are a PITA but in today's world particularly with the remote access and cloud storage are a necessary evil.
Windows 8.1 automatically sends a copy of every file to a 50 gig cloud storage unless you tell it not to during the set up. This is great, I guess, for all the folks on the move all the time that want to access data from a little remote device somewhere. It is promoted as a back up and all kinds of neat worldly things.
For our purposes we don't need it so I turned it off.

put on a demo for the neighbors of one of his old restored tractors. Without a secured WIFI set up somebody could be sitting in the driveway
downloading all the data from her hard drive.

ALL that is done by using a local account is that you dont link your account to the "Live Cloud", you can still use passwords, setup file security, etc. The 8.1 machine at work is on the domain and uses the standard domain login. No reason to have it tied to a Live account...

i switched from Norton when norton360 came out and went to kaspersky with no regrets that's got to be 5-6 years ago or more wont go back.Norton slows your machine way down.

Microsoft Security Essentials... We run Kaspersky at work and while I like it, MSE seems to be as good (albeit with a few less features and options, none of which I use on my personal computer).

here's my update.

got home to a surprise. power went out due to the rainstorm.

hows that grab ya. i left my laptop installing win 8 and the power died. i assume the ups kept the router up some time, plus the laptop battery.

i feared the worst as i can't imagine dieing while installing an OS is good. however i booted back up and it went right back to the app store screen and continued the download.. plus it started an hp update.

finished those.. rebooted about 20 times. asked to text a code to the wifes iphone. put that in. waited another 20m and it done i guess. win 8.1 and ie 11.

and did it thru a forced power ouutage.

i'm actually quite impressed i'm not having to take it back and have it repaired after that.

It also wont sync your preferences if you have more than one computer you use.. Mine syncs between my tower, laptop, xbox, and windows phone.. It also means I get texts and messages on any one I happen to be logged into.

Avast! is also very good.. Comparisons show pretty much a wash between them, with Avast! having more control and features.
