cool.. i knew their had to be a better way to shut down than the horse and pony trick I was doing... at least I hoped their was.

I'm just glad it recovered from power loss during install.

lastly. that text it sent for registering came in in about 5 seconds.

still not sure how that makes it more secure.

do theives not have texting?

Test it...
Try getting into your wife's computer from a computer at work without a password and request a new code from Microsoft saying you lost or forgot the old one.

At home use one of your other wireless connected devices and try to get into her computer while it is on and again while it is hybernating.

Report back.

what happens when some poor soul changes their phone carrier/ number AFTER getting their pc setup. I know it does not happen often.. but does happen.

seems like it's a bit elephantine for the average user. for the power user with top secret documents and national secrets on their pc.. might be ok.. .. just saying...

as a new 8.1 ( 8.0 ) user. am I wrong in assuming to turn off.. you click on the username / profile icon at the top right of the desktop, log out, and then from the logged out screen pull it up a lil to hit the 1/0 button, then select shut down?

any other easier way?

If you have a laptop you can make it show down when you close the lid.

I had most of windows OS, I'm not a geek but every one of them paled compared to this apple product I have. I've had this for over two years with not one regret other than not getting this sooner. There is no bugs out there for them. Also very fast compared to any windows. just my opinion.
Check out the Macs

There ARE virus and whatnot for Apple... Learn a little more

Its just a second step verification.. Google and every one is doing it now. It helps guard against someone who knows your passwords.

Barnes & Noble finally got the book that was specially written for me, and I bought it today at the Golden Triangle Mall.

And if you don't think that title is appropriate for me . . . . . I didn't check online before we went to the mall, so I paid the full $27.05 ($24.99 plus tax) for it.:duh:

I'm the OP on this and let me say I have had zero issues with W8. While I'm a computer illiterate because I don't care, I am mechanically proficient enough to sniff out an answer. So it has worked 100% for me. I can surf the web, do email, figure out pictures, play music and that's what I do. The Toshiba laptop I bought is detailed back in post #550 with a revision a couple posts later.

I did for my wife, but told her to just explore the buttons and see what happens. She hasn't opened the book and is getting
along fine.
