Price of a cord of firewood

/ Price of a cord of firewood #61
Here in Southwest Virginia I noticed an ad on CL for seasoned wood $120 a cord not stacked or a full-size pickup for $70. Actually, it is a violation of state law to sell wood by the "load". All wood sold must be sold by a recognized unit of measure. Either by the cord (128 cubic ft.) or by the amount of cubic ft.

Sort of like buying gas and they say I will sell you a can of gas for X amount of money but either they don't say how big the can is or how many gallons is in the can. Not much on government regulations but I do understand the need for this one. They just don't have a "firewood police" to enforce it.

Same here in Northeast TN. Nobody knows what a cord is......all wood ads are "pickup load".....completely meaningless amount.

I stopped at a local wood "dealer" a couple days ago looking to buy 8 foot lengths of green hardwood. He has a processor working a few days a week, selling cut and split wood for $260 a cord. He refused to sell any full lengths, which tells me he's paying a lot less for a cord than $260, and can make a lot more money after cutting and splitting it than he would if he sold me full lengths at a markup.

You can get a rough idea of historical prices in these reports. It's hard to find current reports usually. I guess it takes a while to compile the stats.

Am curious as to what you all pay in your areas for a cord of wood.

I sold firewood in Manhattan many years ago. Small quantity calculated out came to over $600/cord. Looks like the price has nudged up a bit since then as the same math comes out to over $1,500 per cord! Might be time to call up some old customers... :)

People who sell "felled a year ago, split last week" wood as seasoned really get my goat. If it's seasoned, I should be able to burn it today, and that means at least six months since splitting.

I burn no less than 2 year old wood (since blow down or cut down), usually 3.

Only if Manhattan is less than 50 miles from the stump where the wood was cut, or you have a kiln to dry the firewood...Gotta love the new regulations. May have something to do with the uptick in price there though

People pay for a health club. He gets his excersise and gets paid for it.

You ain't kidding either. We just joined a health club primarily for the wifey and I am determined to get rid of another 15-20 pounds of fat. My diet is now at a level that I am maintaining or loosing weight so any exercise will burn fat. Years ago, I did Atkins and lost the weight but I my diet was not under control so I gained the weight back even though I was working long hours on our property AND going to a gym.

I bought a heart rate monitor early this year, or late last year, to use on the indoor bike. I started wearing it outside when splitting wood, running the chainsaw and going to the gym. I have only been going to the gym for a month or so and I am NOT pushing myself. I have learned to NOT push myself since all I do is get injured or so sore I can't work out as much as I would like. At the gym, I walk or run, the gym has a little track, use the dozen or so weight machines, use the rowing torture device, and the step machine. The most calories I have burned has been around 1,100 calories. The workouts will get more taxing over time and I will burn more calories, eventually...

Saturday, I ran three tanks of fuel through the chain saw cutting up a couple smaller trees and one large tree. In about the same time I spent in the gym, I burned around 1,400 calories! I think I burned more than that because the chainsaw engine seems to interfere with the heart rate monitor. All I was doing was cutting the tree into rounds so I can split. When I was splitting wood over the summer, I was burning up to 1,600-1,700 calories in a bit over two hours which produced about 1/3 of a cord of wood.

After splitting, I have to move the wood to the house. Right now, the trees are downhill from the house, so I have to push the loaded twin wheel barrow UPHILL which is good exercise!:laughing::laughing:

To have a cord of firewood, a good, ball park guess is that it takes at least 2,000 calories to cut up a tree into splitting rounds and at least another 4,500 calories to split the wood. So at least 6,500 calories to get a cord of wood. Or to put it another way, I loose, or should loose, about 2 pounds of fat to get a cord of firewood! :laughing::laughing:

Hopefully, with the gym AND my usual chores, I can loose what I call the Emergency Pouch which the kids call my fat stomach.:eek::D:D:D

Dan

Smells better too. Downside: can't watch the college girls in their Zumba class.

At the gym I go too, the classes which are mostly attended by girls, are in a room which cannot be viewed from the main part of the gym. Now, this might seem bad, but I am one of the YOUNGEST people in the gym! Some of the ladies are in great shape.... But then there are others....:laughing::laughing:

The men are far worse! :D:D:D

Thankfully, the step machine I am using is in the front row so I do not have to look at some people's back sides. Some are rather attractive but there are far more unattractive sights that I would rather be in The Front Row!:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Dan
