No money in selling "a stripped down, low cost compact diesel pickup" - so long as we don't run out of peasants dumb enough to take on ridiculous amounts of debt to buy a loaded 1 ton, just so they can cruise down to the mall to load up on junk from China.....

Just finished the Detroit Marketing mantra for ya......

Yeah, we beat this one to death in Scooby's thread. Two personal options to address this are A) move to a 2'nd or 3'rd World country, or B) wait till the NA economy completes it's slide to that status.

Was actually discussing a Kubota swap option with a buddy yesterday..... that's looking good too.

3930dave - are you following the half ton Nissan / Cummins 5.0L V8 development? Did anybody unearth mileage projections for that combo?

I'm thinking if the 3.6L Colorado 4x4 could average 21mpg for me and do my work, that would be great. Plus, it would fit in the garage better than a full size.

ruffdog, that garage issue is a big one for many. My suburban sticks out more than foot, so it stays outside. Almost any full size truck would also.
That 3.6 is a great engine, but you do need to wind it out a bit, but it makes nice noises doing so. Have had it in two Cadillacs and it's a nice engine, but not particularly fuel efficient from my experience.
I wonder when GM is going to try to shove their supercharged V6 in a truck?
I've wondered how long they would let Ford hold the boosted V6 market.

Why oh why can't we get a simple truck, the size of the old S-10's, with a four cylinder diesel and a choice of trans?
I really, really don't need adaptive cruise control or a power moonroof in a truck like this, keep it simple...

...... For the gentleman farmer or the commuter, or weekend warrior that goes to Home Depot, without heavy towing needs, they are going to have to get a lot more weight out of this truck before higher mpg figures are gained, and then, would it be a good "truck"??

I was thinking the same thing. Heck I wish they would bring out a small unibody truck with independent suspension, at least a 6' bed that could carry 1,000-1,200 pounds, and tow maybe up to 3,500 pounds. Put a small 6 cyl DI GAS engine in it with a wide ratio 6-speed manual transmission in which 1st would be very low (basically a creeper) so you would normally start out in 2nd. The same thing could be accomplished with a 6-7 speed auto. A low range transfer case would then be unnecessary. Let's face it how often do people use say 3rd gear in low range? Back when 3 or even 4 speed transmissions were what we had low range was more important but with 6 and 8 speed transmissions now I would think they could utilize them with useful ratios. Give it a traditional 4wd system with freewheeling lock in/out hubs.

Hey Honda, how about a new Ridgeline with more ground clearance, the right transmissions, available access cab with 6'+ bed, offered in RWD and a real 4WD? And make the back half not so ugly while you're at it.

and I was thinking about the Ridgeline too.
or a shrunken Avalanche...

they can do anything money will buy, and money will buy an all aluminum alloy truck beefed up with space age materials,
will weigh 4000 pounds, and cost more than anyone is willing to pay. I think Alcoa is going to be kept very busy.

I'm definitely interested in that data, but haven't dug it up yet, sorry :).

More diesel choices !

1) What B&D said.

2) Your post is a good example of how the Powers That Be have saved us all from evil diesels by tilting the playing field so that the US market (and to only a slightly lesser extent, the Canadian one) is flooded with high output gas engines, many of which don't get great mileage under real-world conditions. AKA un-negotiated trade barriers, buying corn votes.....

I believe that France and Germany are instituting tighter emissions regs, if I read that right.
So tighter emissions aren't just our issues.
Of course we could stop all control and have the air China or Mexico City has, do we really want that?

Let's just blame it all on California.
Everything starts there first.
