"Buzzards gotta eat... same as worms." With apologies to Josey Wales.

Turn the Coyotes into Buzzard food.

If you are shotgunning for coyote, here is a recommended load.

Hevi-Shot Dead Coyote | Shooting Illustrated

Hevishot has a full line of Dead Coyote, including #4 buck, which would be my choice. It's expensive, but worth the money I think.

Larry that looks like a very good load for the song dogs, being heavier than lead and carrying more energy. And with the uniformity of the pellets giving better patterns.

I would say a good semi auto shotgun would probably let you cut down on a group of coyotes at up to 50 yards with a high probability of clean kills.

A camper with the Rainbow Gathering brought along a dog with parvo a few years ago. It really thinned out the coyotes. I think 90% of them died. A neighbor who ranches sheep puts out poison bait. Apparently there's a bait that won't kill vultures. I don't know what it is.

A few years ago there was a guy with a couple bloodhounds trained to run coyotes. They made quite a circuit in our valley. Eventually the coyotes broke cover, and the hunters were able to shoot them.

When I have nothing better to do I can go to my high pasture and call in some coyotes. Usually in the late spring - its a lot warmer then. I've never seen anybody take a coyote with a shotgun. They usually will not get close enough, even with calling. If a coyote comes in close enough that you can take him with a shotgun - you darn well best not miss, he's very likely rabid. And at 50 yards you will just be blowing holes in the air unless you want to try a slug load. I use a 22-250 with 6-18 variable scope. I can, with great accuracy, reach out and "touch" most anything out to 300-400 yards. There are a few that found this out the hard way.

Hmmmmm ... at least for "dogs", parvo is only a threat under the age of 1 year. After that, they tend to survive.

Rural living indeed.
AAh, so beautiful then when it becomes too rural, you kill it.

Go back to your ticky tacky finely mown fenced in 1/4 acre yard suburbia. You'll be happier.

rsallen, I concur "somewhat" with your point of view. However, coyotes can be devastating to livestock and a danger to pets. As with any predator, human or otherwise, people have a right to decide when they will take action to protect themselves from an ongoing threat. When a rattlesnake coils up at your front door, do you get it a bowl of milk and some cookies - or do you quickly dispatch it?

Any tips on hunting coyotes?

Coyotes are very smart/wary animals. If you go out and just walk around looking for them, they will see you before you see them. Best bet is to sit motionless and wait for them to appear in early morning or late afternoon. Use a rifle capable of long range like a .223 with scope.

Yeah point taken.
You keep livestock to protect, ie. your livelihood is one thing.
However when you want to change the very nature of where you live or have moved to, why move or live there? Go someplace where you're more comfortable.
The people that let loose pets could really care less about those said pets. If they did they wouldn't be just opening the door and letting them go out to roam free.
But after all it is rural so it's okay it's not like in the city, 'oh **** it's a dog eat dog world out here'. 'Oh dear let's shoot 'it' so a fufu or purr kitten can live'.
It's sickening.
