Lost little dog to coyotes

RSallen, I agree completely with your comments. If you can't live with the wildlife then you best move back to suburbia. Example - my neighbor is a big cattle rancher. He brings his heifers in during calving so the coyotes won't eat the young. He DOES NOT go out and kill every coyote in sight - even if he could. He, obviously, has little or no liking for coyotes but he understands they also have a place out here and he respects that. In 32 years here I've killed exactly three coyotes - before I realized they too have a right to be here, probably more so than I. The answer to a problem is not normally to just kill it - although there are some who have trespassed here and may think otherwise. I suffer uninvited folks very poorly.

Again, partially agree. I have little tolerance for folks that let their pets roam on my property. As an aside, I have neighbors who don't bother drawing a distinction between coyotes or a neighbor's dogs. Coyotes, however, will clear a 6 foot fence with ease to go after fufu. Sometimes, you just get faced with a situation that requires an unfortunate solution.

WE don't want to kill all the coyotes, we just want to thin them out when they get too thick. Same with the deer and the hogs. They all need a good thinning. There are way way too many of all three. Mankind caused this and it is up to man to keep them in check. I grew up on the farm and we had no feral pig explosion and very few deer and coyotes were extensively hunted and kept in check. Now we have too many. You can do whatever you want. But I believe some wildlife management is in order.

I can believe a coyote could find a way in, around or under a six foot fence, but clear?
I've had some very good jumping dogs in the past and I've got one now that can climb a 7' + wall, but jump a six foot fence. Nah,it ain't going to happen coyote or not.

Well, I guess my friend who watched his small dog get attacked was just lying.

Perhaps "clear" was a bad choice of words on my part. Let's just say, a 6 foot fence is not a guarantee.

Your friend was there at the scene? And the coyote still came in to for a kill on it's territory? And your friend didn't move to help his pet /partner/friend against the aggressor?
He ought to learn what having a dog is about.
You're either all in or get out of the fight.

Tell him to go back to suburbia.

You assume too much.
Also, even if you love you love your dog, unless you have a weapon (ie: club, shovel, bucket of water, firehose, etc) getting within range of the teeth of a canine (be it a dog, coyote, wolf, etc) that is in a fight is foolish at best.

I assume nothing.

He either has there or he wasn't. And if he wasn't he has no idea what happened and is only talking about what may have happened.
And if he was on the scene shame on him.

I can watch a coyote jump the fence, sit there stunned for a moment that it cleared a 6' fence while it starts to attack my dog, then do something about it...

Rural living indeed.
AAh, so beautiful then when it becomes too rural, you kill it.

Go back to your ticky tacky finely mown fenced in 1/4 acre yard suburbia. You'll be happier.

Well there are a lot of people who hunt predators, such as coyotes and bobcats, for sport. Hunting the hunters, as it were. Perfectly legitimate activity. The best that they will do is thin the crop a little bit, think of it game management. Are you against people who hunt squirrels, rabbits, prairie dogs, deer, turkey, elk, hogs, etc. ad infinitum. Man is the top of the food chain and hunts, just like coyotes hunt.
