Any one seen a drone?

I am a sports fan, but rarely watch them because of time constraints. (so I am not that big of a fan I guess because they usually fall as my last priority). Anyway, I like announcers sometimes because you may not catch everything, especially for sports like football and hockey- hard to miss if something does actually happen in baseball. I also learn things from them from time to time about penalties issued or whatever that I may have not been aware of. I do agree however, most of the time they talk too much and the 3 or 4 times explaining things can get annoying. I guess they are just filling in the time between plays.

OK. Drone flew over house again this morning maybe, 100 ft above. I figured I've had enough of this and called the County Sheriff's Dept. to see what's going on. Guess what, they don't have any drones. Now I'm wondering, who exactly is flying over our area all the time. I'm open for ideas. No, we're not cooking meth or making corn liquor, or growing wacky weed. What do you think?

Are you close to Blacksburg?

DOD has contracts with a couple of colleges in SW Virginia for drone research.
Va Tech is into it BIG.

I saw hundreds of drones last week when I was splitting firewood. Great big black buggers with six legs and wings and an unholy appetite for wood.

Oh, you mean the motorized kind being flown by NSA and other ill-intentioned folks.

My property isn't a construction site, or a road improvement project, there's no wildfires burning there, and I don't have lost children in my woods except down by the Gingerbread house and the wicked witch takes care of collecting and eating those pests.

Airspace over your property is NOT public below a certain altitude. Basically, if it's low enough for you to hit it, it's too low to be legally there.

I once knew of a man who lived close by the local airstrip/runway, He built a 50 ft + windmill/ tower to keep the planes from coming so close to his home, ( Literally over his house roof) So apparently there is truth to this, limitations to how low they can fly over a structure,

The FAA limit in uncontrolled airspace is 500' (150 m) from structures or people. Other than those types of exclusions, there is no low limit. Exceptions apply around airports.

This is good article and not lengthy.

Very helpful. Thanks. We have come to the conclusion these are training flights and not big brother snooping. My next step is filing a complaint with the FAA. And maybe, out comes the .308...

"Drone" conjures up images of nefarious robotic flying machines firing rockets at terrorists or counting nose hairs on targets from a mile up. But, it could be as simple as the neighbor down the street with the remote control airplane he painted up to look like the things they show on the news. I'd keep a camera nearby with a high zoom level and try to take some pictures of it. Maybe you could get some identifying marks off it and figure out what it is. Or jump in the truck with a spotter and start following it around. See where it lands :)

I've been at the Jack Dalton park, behind the Henry county courthouse, and seen people flying remote control airplanes around. So its not far fetched to think that people in your area are flying RC planes.
