To answer your question can you get a stripped down 3/4 from the big 3. Yes you can I have a 2012 st package 6.7 diesel 6 speed manual. On the base package you get cruise, power windows and locks. It is the nicest base truck I have ever had but you save a ton of money on the base price.

When I say stripped.. I mean stripped out like my 84 f150 or my 78 F250. Nothing in it besides AM-FM radio and vinyl floor mats (great for hose-out-ability). Crank windows (with hillbilly A/C AKA corner vent push out windows) and manual locks. I dont think that is available any more is it?

.... The simple fact is that trucks not used to their capacity are probably the most fuel inefficient choice of them all.

Seems to me that they are measuring "vacation" mileage for many of us when our reality is more stop and go and under 50 around town.

Just wondering if the real life combined mpg for light trucks ought to be much more weighted to city mpg than what the advertising is touting.

I'm not sure I understand but I don't notice a higher percentage of trucks in the city, maybe just the opposite? We all see a lot of (most?) cars and empty trucks driving around with only one occupant, mine included. That's why I'm interested in a smaller more efficient truck and wish our government Cafe standards would encourage small trucks rather than penalize them. Regardless (unless I'm hauling) in nice weather mine sits and I'm on a motorcycle.

Milo, not disagreeing with you, I can only witness this from my Eastern suburbia, where the majority of trucks are used by landscapers, and the rest by you and I, with a few smatterings of tradesmen, many of whom are now going to the Sprinter/MB style vans. We are even seeing some pretty neat new Ford vans around, lot of Euro influence.

When I went to look at the Frontier, I test sat both the two door and the four door. The rear seats in the four door were such penalty boxes and cramped all around, clearly not made for 200+pounders like myself. Probably fine for sub teenagers. And the four door version only came with a small bed. I think if you are getting a truck, and clearly none of us totally agree on what a truck is..., nor should we have to...;) it ought to have a decent sized bed in it. Six foot minimum. Seven foot is better. That extra foot doesn't weigh much, and adds a lot of utility for those who need a full truck of hay or mulch or whatever.

And if they had offered a Nissan diesel in the Frontier, I would have paid up to three thousand more for it, if it gave me at least a 25% increase in towing capacity and mpg. Without that degree of benefit, I don't see the value. The stock V6 is strong, but the torque of a diesel is what we want when towing. And I towed with the Frontier gasser just fine. And expectations have to be reasonable for three grand too. This is is not an 800 foot pound application, but what? 400?
450? I can see the banner line by Duramax: FIRST to 500 in a compact truck!

But please GM, don't charge us three grand for $999 worth of oomph...

I got a Golf TDI for the same reason, well almost..., as your motorcycle.

Earlier this year we overloaded such vehicles and climbed rough mountain roads with surprising speed in Haiti. We even passed a cop car with lights and siren that was pursuing another vehicle.

Oh would I love to see a video of that. did you offer to throw a chain and pull him faster up the hill? :D

I was seated in the mid row next the sliding door and 1/2 buried under equipment, gear, supplies, clothing, luggage etc. The driver was a local with another Orphanage employee in the co-pilot seat growling at the driver every time he did something particularly questionable. The roads, most vehicles, drivers, cargo, pedestrians, traffic laws and use of the horn was stereotypical of 3rd world countries. I was close a few times to pleading with the statue of a v!rgin on the dash.

I suspect many "pickup"owners would be better off with a SUV and a modest trailer. I only need a pickup half a dozen times a year for heavy trailering or I would get rid of the old fuel hog.

You can get the vinyl floor mats in think you can order with out ac but is pointless you can get better deals with the base setup than Oder a specific stripped model.

I was told a story one time about a local business that ordered his work vans stripped no ac window cranks no cruise and paid more for it than one with that stuff.

Back when UPS still ran cab over Volvo trucks (up until mid 90's iirc) they were ordered with out power steering. I was told it ended up costing them more to buy them that way.

I had a friend who bought a brand new Dodge 6.7 Cummins the first year they came out. We were waiting on someone in it one day and just checking out all the buttons and what not. He'd had it maybe a week tops. I was playing with the fan and with out even thinking I said "uh dude, where's your "snow flake" button?" Brand new truck, no A/C. The salesman never told him it didn't have it and in this day in time you just kind of expect A/C to be there. He was never happy with that truck after that.

I have seen some Ford's Superduty trucks on lots with out a/c.

Enough $$$ to afford a diesel and the extra service costs inherent to emissions diesels. Yet they can't come up with the $$$ for AC. Resale value just plummeted. Don't tell me either it's a guarantee that you actually will drive that truck into the ground.
