If that's similar to his truck, I would say he shouldn't be towing that load with it.
I didn't say there was no difference in the truck which has heavier components like axles, brakes and springs. It has been a few years but last time I compared 3/4 ton to 1/2 ton there was no difference in GVW between the two, however towing capacity changes and the 3/4 ton weighs more but GVW is the same so you can actually tow less with a 3/4 than a 1/2 ton. Someone with nothing else to do could look up current truck specs and compare them to see if they have changed in the last 10 years.I don't know that the frames are different but you are right about the heavier suspension, probably heavier duty tires (often 1/2 ton trucks today are designed for car type comfort). Gary Fowler was wrong to say there is no difference except an extra spring. I've been there, and there was definitely a difference in handling the identical load between a half ton and a 3/4 ton truck.
That brings up another issue: tires and axle weights. For any kind of safety, weigh the entire rig (each axle) and make sure the tires are not overloaded and you are within the manufacturer's axle ratings. You do not want to have a blow out from an overloaded tire hauling a rig like this. There are plenty of pictures on the net of overturned pickups and trailers when something goes wrong.View attachment 350410
Also, check your tire pressures and make sure they are maxed up when heavily loaded.
and for another, you're going to want to be closer to 20' than 16' for good balance.
Would be nice to have an actual model number to look up the actual weight,
I just checked Dodge's web site, and the current model year 1500s are all rated for 8,800 lbs towing
He said his truck is a 2008 4x4 hemi. If that's the case. the link I provided states his GCWR is 10,700 it also list towing at 5,050lbs with 392 axle ratio
Plus 1000# for loaded rear tires (assuming AG tires, more if R4s).Tractordata says the 5010 is around 4100 lbs with a cab and no loader. So 5k for one with a loader is probably about right.
