2005 RAM 3500 Injector pump R and R

What's the difference in the 730 referb and the 1200 refurb ? Aren't they both OEM refurb replacements ??

I think we are on different pages, and it is my fault.

I was not talking about a factory reman. What I meant was a busted factory pump being rehabbed by a independent shop that may or may not use OEM factory parts but "made to fit" parts, probably from China.

No, not you. LD had listed 1 place had a 1200.00 pump and another had a 730.00 pump and both were re man pumps. I was just wondering what the differences in the pumps were. He had the 1200.00 pump as a cummins pump. I didn't know cummins had a pump. I thought they were bosch pumps . At least mine is a bosch

Guess I'm confused

Yes they are Bosch pumps. Everywhere I called had both the $700 & $1200 pumps. The cheaper ones are pumps they rebuilt in-house. But the local shops didn't have any at the moment, but could order a reman from "Cummins" for the $1200. That's all I know on the matter.

thanks LD, Hope you can get the old off and the new on and get your truck going with out any problems

I saved the like DT86 provided about how to remove and re install the pump. I wouldn't have known about removing the gear off the front through that hole. Seems like that gear would be hard to line back up not being able to see in that area. Probably use a mirror. O' well may be I won't have to worry about it, but you never know

Keep in mind the VE, P7100 and VP44 pumps are timed with a keyed shaft, so you must find TDC before pump removal. It's not that hard but it is an extra step unrelated to the CP3 removal process.

There are numerous thread that talk about changing the CP3 shaft position in relation to the pump gear position to reduce knock in the engine. Have fun reading those, it seems like you just tinker with until it gets better.

Question were you adding any fuel additives like stanadyne, power service before your failure?Just curious?

This looks to be just pure mechanical failure. I don't think any outside forces were in play like bad fuel, ect.

wow, definitely a fairly rare occurance. Good find!
I would suggest installing auxillary water/fuel seperator filter and possibly a Cat 2 micron filter. I installed this dual filter setup
The BEST Dodge Cummins Fuel Filter Kit Available

Now, the big question, do you feel that all the debris from the failed pump was contained in the injection pump itself, or has it made it into the fuel manifold/injectors?

LD,Not saying this is the cause of your pump failure but, what fuel filter are you using ?? I use a Baldwin PF 7977 They say this is the only 5 micron rated Fuel filter with water separator on the market for these trucks in the stock filter location. I got the info from the dodge Cummins forum... Most (if not all) of the people over there use this filter. I was using the Fleet Guard/Cummins oil filters but, started using the Donaldson oil filters . I wouldn't mind adding additional fuel filters but, at what point do you get so restrictive adding filters as to restrict flow from lift pump to the injection pump ???

I hope. I ran the truck for awhile and never missed a beat. If anything was left in the rail or lines, it should have made itself known by now, or passed through.

No additives

Not sure what the filter is. I have only owned the truck for 10k miles, and deler had just did all the services incliding fuel filter before before I purchased it. So its just now about time for me to do it.
