2005 RAM 3500 Injector pump R and R

I also run the Baldwin fuel filter. I personally don't think a fuel problem was it. The only way I see that is if it was iced up. The only time I run an additive is in the winter when it gets cold to prevent gelling.

I haven't got a clear mental picture of how the failure relates to the fuel system. If the failure is not directly exposed to the fuel stream, no problem. If it is, common rails are very sensitive to any foreign matter. The fuel system can be taken apart and cleaned, but it sounds like a lot of work.

Good luck.

I didn't buy mine new. (bought in 08) 1st thing I did was read up on what filters others were using. Once I found out, I changed them. Like I said, filters may not have prevented your failure, but the stock fuel filter/ water separator is the last line of defense for the injector pump. Good luck with your pump. Now you can plow and make some $$$$$:D:thumbsup:

Only additive I use is 2 cycle oil in the fuel

By the way,,,, was the pump hard/difficult to replace or, fairly easy ??

It wasnt bad to change.

I got home from findlay with the new pump bout 9:30 - 10:00. Spend ~ 30 minutes looking for one of the banjo bolts that fell but didnt come all the way through:mur:

Had the truck running again at 11:30. So about an hour or hour and a half.

That write-up posted in a link in post #2 earlier was spot on. Probably the most difficult part was fighting with the fan shroud. As it would have been 10times easier with a second person, cause the 4 studs, two on top and two on bottom, were a pain. The shroud collapses kinda like bellows. And collapsing the bottoms off the studs, and then going to the top to do the same, the bottoms wanted to pop back on. And vice versa. Not bad, but one of them things that will drive you nuts.

Only other slighty difficult thing was the front gear. I used my steeringwheel puller and the jack bolt on it was almost too long as the fan blades were in the way. Even using the right puller as shown in the link, still looks like a pain.

But overall, probably a 2.5 out of 10 for difficulty. Really the only special tool required was the puller.

And only having to deal with 1 high pressure line, and no need to time like the older ones, I'd say it is probably one of the easier pumps to change.

LD,Not saying this is the cause of your pump failure but, what fuel filter are you using ?? I use a Baldwin PF 7977 They say this is the only 5 micron rated Fuel filter with water separator on the market for these trucks in the stock filter location. I got the info from the dodge Cummins forum... Most (if not all) of the people over there use this filter. I was using the Fleet Guard/Cummins oil filters but, started using the Donaldson oil filters . I wouldn't mind adding additional fuel filters but, at what point do you get so restrictive adding filters as to restrict flow from lift pump to the injection pump ???
Im running a spin on baldwin water seperator filter, into a Cat 2 micron spin on filter, then into the factory filter housing which has a Fleetguard 7 micron filter then into the CP3 pump. All of this is being supplied by the stock in-tank fuel pump. Truck is stock except for a Smarty Jr. and has not experienced any fuel starvation issues.

I really like that set up you linked to. How often do you have to change the 2 spin on filters ? I change the stock filter at every oil change

I just recently installed it. Other people running the same filter setup are reporting approx 30-40K mile service life. Of course, that is solely dependent on fuel cleanliness at the point of sale. What I was mainly interested in was the better water stripping ability of the Baldwin.
The factory filter is reported to go over 100K after installing this system. Its basically a safety catch while replacing the spin on filters.
