I am torn on what size tractor to get. I am recently buying a 4 acre property that has a bunch of woods and a 300' long drive way. Will be looking for something to put in the landscaping and yard along with clean up the woods and remove tree stumps to add a pole building. This tractor will also be moving snow in the winter time.

What are your thoughts for brand, and size that you would use.

I am actually leaning toward a compact over a subcompact.

Try a B series Kubota.

Yeah B Series Kubota or equivalent in Kioti, JD etc. My brother recently bought a CK27 he really likes, but I think Kioti is changing some of their models and I'm not familiar with them. In that size I prefer the Kioti unless you get into the full featured B Series Kubota like the Bxx30 and successors; be prepared to spend more money though.

That is the size that I was thinking also. Thank you for the input so far.

What brands are you guys seeing as being most reliable, the JD listed in my info is just a garden tractor. Hasn't let me down at all, but hard to justify the price of that green paint. LOL

What Dealers you have by you?

There are a couple Kubota and New Holland dealers close by along with a Bobcat dealer. I have driven all of the brands.

I have owned heavy equipment years ago, but mostly case and cat along with bobcat skid loader. My last compact tractor was a Massey Ferguson.

It would not see any commercial use only personal on my property and most likely at deer camp to put in food plots and grade the road in.

NH is made by LS with a different Loader. Go to all the dealers and test drive 25 to 35 hp tractors. Try to hit any within 50 miles of you.

It is a really tough market right now as I haven't seen any reliability issues with any of the top brands given non commercial use which is all I have any experience.

I guess I am not familiar with LS Murphy, can you explain?

LS is a spin-off of LG, the electronics company, which is a spin-off of Hyundai. They have been building tractors for other brands (Montana, Farmtrac, etc.) for like 40 years and have recently begun manufacturing all compact tractors for New Holland. In 2009, they started marketing tractors under their own brand which is LS. They are almost the identical tractor to a New Holland for a lot less money. They also normally come with more features like rear hydraulic remotes, etc. I just bought a 47hp LS. In my opinion it was the best overall value for tractors in that hp range.

Worth checking out.

As for the original question, the answer is what you feel comfortable with and what you have to do. I see a lot of people with that size of land with ~35hp models. If you're not lifting heavy things or pulling a big plow, I would suggest a 30-35hp tractor would be more than sufficient. Cabs are great in the winter, but not so great in the woods.

I almost made the mistake of not looking at John Deere also. Glad I looked. I got the best price from them. Dealer network is the best of any tractor I have seen. I looked at Kioti, Mahindra, LS, Kubota, you name it, I looked at it. I ended up buying a JD 3032E with FEL and 5' brush hog for $16,999. The dealer had 6 of these 2013 models so I'm sure that is why I got that price. Point being, it pays to shop around and don't rule any brand out. Plus you can get $1000 off right now if you buy 2 implements and 0% financing for 5 years. Last time I checked you couldn't borrow money for 0% anywhere. Good luck, and check around. My tractor will be delivered Monday.

I bought my Kioti CK27HST with a front mount snow blower and loader up here in Canada for $31,000.oo.
We Canadians just love to get bent over the fuel tanks and screwed up the ying yang for tractors, cars and trucks. :(
It works for me on my 5 acres.

IMG_1196.JPGI like the B series of Kubota for the best frame size to power ratio especially for small acreages. They are highly maneuverable and easy to use with an HST 3 range HST drive as compared to many others in that size with only a 2 range HST transmission.
Or you could buy 2 tractors like I did, the orange one is a B 26 Kubota TLB and the blue one is an LS P7010.
