It's like the for my Law Enforcement Friends... one is retired in all but the retirement party.

He has the better part of a year of sick leave to burn through.

At one of the county hospitals... unused sick time is put towards employee part of retirement medical... so when sick leave is applied at $80 a month... it can be decades before having to actually pay out of pocket.

In my city 75% of the entire city budget goes to past and present police and fire.

Current Law Enforcement package averaged 190k per officer last year.

SF General Public Hospital Paid 6.5 million to the Sheriff for security deputies last fiscal year.

In Dallas, there is a Police & Fire Pension System that is separate from the city budget except that the city pays into it a percentage of the ACTIVE payroll. When I retired, I was paying 12.5% of my GROSS salary into the pension system and the city was paying in 25%. I'm not sure what the employees are paying now, but the city has reduced the percentage they pay.

And California salaries and pensions have long been incredibly higher than in Texas.

At one time public and private were closer in parity.

Oakland Law Enforcement has been 100% city for pension and medical... this is starting to change
