I don't understand how commuters into Toronto save money by driving in from Port Hope, Peterborough, Barrie, Grand Valley , Kitchener , Hamilton and St Catherine's . They also loose 2 to 4 hours of their life in the vehicle every day.

Various reasons.

In many sectors (outside of govt), people change jobs/companies every 2-4 years. Some are stuck with ever-changing short contract jobs. Job instability in other words.... it's the new normal. So while living near work is ideal, for many people that means constantly moving - some people chose to stabilize their home location and just drive as needed.

As with many things, if you are wealthy, then you have more choices. Plunk down $600k+ for a house in the GTA, or at least buy a condo for the Monday to Thursday nights you need to stay in the city. Many people don't have that choice available. If you take on the larger mortage to live in the city, you end up burning the commuting time you've gained working side-jobs to pay the larger mortgage - most of us peasants won't gain time that way.

For the right job, I'll make the drive. I used to get to my office in Mississauga on our weekly meeting day for 6:00am (my choice), put in that day at the office and seeing nearby clients. The other 4 days were spent seeing clients. A lot of driving, but it was varied, and to a sizeable extent, outside of rush-hour(s).

Not for everybody, but I'd do it again, for the right price :D.

But yeah.... that actually circles back to Why Diesel ? It's always made more sense (operational $ terms) to high and ultra-high mileage drivers - at least in Canada.

Last I checked, a tdi will beat most hybrids, in steady/continuous highway driving.

When I first worked in Etobicoke, there was an engineer that commuted daily from Trenton. That's about 180km one-way; a bit high even my my standards !

I used to live near highway 27 and Finch beside Humber College.
We figured it was cheaper to live close and reduce the miles. I was in local 353 on jobs all over the city.

Not a bad location, for getting around the city. It's gotten pretty rough around there, these days; I don't think you'd want to move back.

The DirtyMax engines will like be these Italian designed units by VM Motori Fiat in the mid 1990's. They have been in service for years and should be "de-bugged". Double overhead cams.
Pretty much the same engine used in the diesel Chev Cruz.
It's related to the 3.0TD that Fiat/Dodge is using. Fiat/Dodge ishttp://www.vmmotori.com/news-flash/notizie-2.html perhaps keeping the 240,247 and 270 V6 TD to themselves ?

2.8L/197HP and revs to 3800rpm. 452 lbs weight. A 428 DOHC - VM Motori

2.5L/154HP and revs to 3800rpm . 485lb weight. R 425 DOHC - VM Motori

It wasn't very long ago a factory built gasser could not make that much HP per cubic inch

UGLY! Well the centre console/info centre is. Drivers gauges look ok. I think its the heater vents that are doing it. Streamline those and I think it'll be ok.
that is one UGLY lookin pieced together combo of an interior:(
I couldnt look at that everyday.
Even if it was a diesel:)

For me the WT dash would be fine...less busy. Diesel fuel, pound for pound gives you 15% more energy than gasoline so you break even if it costs 15% more.

And that is the problem it's at least 15% more, most of the time it costs 20% more (at least around here) and you're already "upside down" $5,000 at purchase.

It is probably not cost effective driving a empty truck with a big diesel engine vs working a diesel. It seems I can mow twice the amount with diesel than gasoline on my property.

Exactly. The cost of diesel fuel makes it difficult to recoup the up front cost difference even when spread over 10 years. Unless. Unless you tow all the time. That's where the gas mpg's dip dramatically (no mater what brand or size). For the average user, you pay up front and gradually get most of it back over 10 years and with the trade-in value. If you tow all the time it would pay for itself much sooner.
