well shoot, Just received a call from my mother. Seems she failed the heart stress test (had been getting winded and tired lately and they focused on blood work) So her Doc called in a favor at the hospital in Decatur and she is going in this morning at 10:30am for what they think will end in emergency coronary angioplasty (sp) (haven't had time to "look it up" worked last night so dragging pretty bad.) Kind of hard to wake up to that kind of call, but glad it has been caught. They wont know 100% what they will find until they get her "on the table". She is 73 and mostly alone since my step dad passed away 2 years ago.

This really sucs, we where happy for her to be leaving today for 2 months to hang out with her cousin and sister in Arizona and California, but I am thankful it is being dealt with now, before it could be worse.

Well quick shower ,wet hair and headed to the hospital.

WesternOur- thoughts and prayers are with you and your mother.

Charlie, you're not being a little facetious are you?:D

And yep, Dennis, we're having some nice weather, but sure do need rain for the lakes and reservoirs. But in the meantime, while the weather is nice . . . I had a 5 man crew from a tree service here early yesterday morning to do some pretty drastic pruning for me, then when they left, I put the bagger on the Toro ZTR and filled 4 contractor bags with leaves and grass clippings. It was exactly 2 months since that Toro (Kohler engine) had been started, and I was beginning to wonder if it was going to start before it finally did. Fortunately, the battery had been in the shop on the maintainer so it was fully charged. Then, just because they also had not been started since last year;) I fired up the Mantis tiller and the Stihl string trimmer for awhile just to see if they still worked.

Charlie, I have a problem with the $500,000+ signs they are putting outside of the schools, the digital ones. Rather see that money go towards education or scholarships.

Amen Western. We spend enough money on education, just not enough effort on the quality part. When I have to make my trects into the Metroplex I'm amazed at the size and expense of the HS Football Stadiums. I've seen Colleges with lesser facilities.

A no fat diet will do much harm, low fat is good. , depends on what "fat" you're eating, some fats such as Omega 3 are beneficial, trans fatty acids should be totally avoided. many kinds of fat some good some bad.

Think I will go have a bowl of Blue Bell now:D

Hey!! the weekend is looking like Springtime almost 70* for Sunday!!

Dennis, In the Century Study I'm in, the fat intake should not be more than 10% and of course none of the bad fats. When I say no fat I really mean no ADDED fats. Oatmeal naturally is 6% fat. all grains and nuts and even veggies and fruits have fat. Once fat is added you quickly go over the 10%. For the omega's 3 - 2 tablespoons of ground flax seed in my oatmeal takes care of my daily need without adding concentrated oils or having to eat fish. This is the diet specifically for people with heart disease who do not want the NEXT PROCEDURE or ANOTHER heart attack only, so enjoy your Bluebell!

Dennis are you still planning on getting a heart scan? I got one in February years ago because the hospital had a Valentine's special of $99. It was very accurate.

Another beautiful day!

I had just gone vegan about 2 months before my heart attack and in recovery I was mad and thinking what am I missing. After reading Esselstyn's book there was as Ah ha moment. During recovery I was very strict and it paid off with 100% of the heart function returning. The more research and the more cardiologists I talk to only encourage this strict lifestyle. I just wish I had all this knowledge years BEFORE my heart attack so the plaque would have been stabilized or reduced. I'm sure the impending bypass is just as much incentive as a heart attack - I bet she will do just fine.

Don,
You have mentioned regaining 100% heart function after your heart attack a number of times. That is wonderful
Do you attribute that primarily to the rigorous exercise program that you followed up until your knees gave out ?

I know you are a strong advocate of a Vegen+ diet. Wouldn't you consider that to be a preventative part of the plan to try to avoid further plaque build up and potential future blockage?

Sometimes your wording implies, at least to me, that you are giving credit to the diet for the recovery of damaged heart muscle. Is that what you are meaning?

You must have had a heart attack type where no arteries were completely blocked. I think the technical term is
NON-STEMI.

A person that has heart attacks, like my mother did, have dead tissue that can never be recovered/regained.
23 % of her heart muscle was dead. However, she did live to be 87 years old some 5+ years past her first attack.

You mentioned your concern about your distance from your hospital. Time certainly is a factor in limiting damage.
However, she lived only 1 mile from the hospital. Who knows how long she dallied prior to making the call, though.
She was administered clot busters within minutes of her arrival.
She described it later as the most excruciating pain she had ever had. The pain was in her jaw.

After that we moved her out here to the farm, she just wouldn't hear of it before, because she lived in a nice neighborhood and walked everyday talking to her neighbor friends.
We are 30 minutes from the hospital but soon found out we could take her to the hospital much quicker ourselves
than waiting on the EMT transport that is 5 miles from here. So everything must be considered, not just distance.

Don, I understood when you posted "yes":) I knew what you where in essence doing. I couldn't in good conscience NOT try to :rattle" ya:D The diet you're on (10%) is usually to help reverse plaque buildup and contain it from what I recall. From what I remember hearing from my family growing up, a 12-14% range would be great for anyone wanting to have good energy, clear thought and good heart health protection as a way of life. Doesn't always go that way though and since most food is bought, it is even harder to negotiate the nutrition isle. Allot of people (most) dont give their nutrition a second thought until they wake up in the ER (if their fortunate), then others like me, have an "idea" but then squander the knowledge. Just being honest:laughing:

I though about starting this as a "New thread" topic and still may, but what do you guys think??

For folks that live in the country, especially those with existing conditions, such as Ron's mother, Don, me, or those that want some additional "insurance" have any of y'all consider Air evacuation medical membership/insurance??

Cost us about $60 a year for the family and covers what our medical wont as far as medical emergency transport (helo/plane). What ever the insurance doesn't pay, the membership pays the remainder. If you price air evac cost, you could not only save much needed time for emergency care, but could possibly save upwards of 50k in transport fees.

I think Air Evac Lifeteam is the largest in coverage in the nation, but there are many regional evacs. Sure worth you're researching and evaluation.

Here is our local service

Dennis, when we lived down in Navarro County, 20 miles from the nearest medical facility, and a lot farther from good facilities, we maintained a membership in the ETMC Ambulance Services, so I think they're a good idea.

Ron, The diet is for prevention and reversing heart disease. The Cardiologist who inserted the stent said my RCA was 100% blocked. I also confirmed this through the medical records. Considering my heart function decreased to 40% (EF) after, there was definitely damage, you could also see it on the EKG, and I could feel it by the low activity level would get me breathless. From onset to stent placement lasted three hours. I do not think it was 100% blocked for the entire period but it probably was by the time he was looking at it.

I had only two things to work with diet and exercise (I got off my heart meds as soon as I could) and I cannot say how much each contributed to the recovery, but something worked right. I do know that animal products and added fat is not needed for recovery.
(The body produces all the saturated fat that is required and none is needed to be added in your diet.)

Oh, the knee is feeling good and the Dr. said I can start running in January (now) but I think I'll give it one more month. I have several other machines to do cardio.
