Don't you live in a place where you could go to a flea market/gun show and buy some really low priced piece of junk? A very short bbl 22 isn't exactly quiet either.

Crash it HAS to have rifling or you are going to be spending a lot of time in Leavenworth Kansas courtesy of Uncle Sam, if you get caught. Rifling is what makes it a pistol and NOT a short barreled shotgun. You would be ahead to buy some old cheap .22 revolver. I have bought the H&R 8 shots for $50 at gun shows.

Im not sure you can beat a company made gun. My judge works awesome and didn't require any work to keep me from killing/maiming myself. Now if your just one of those kids who couldn't stay in the lines n school, you may have a really cool solution to the problem. Im always amazed by the creativity of folks on this site.

just a few thoughts, do not cut a rifle down it will be considered by the feds to be a sawed off rifle. a single shot .410 with the stock modified and barrel cut to 18.5 inchs would be my choice if I killed snakes which I do not, they are way to beneficial as rodent killers and pose zero threat.

Also if you work on a shotgun or Rifle, the minimum for the shotgun is 18 inches and the rifle is 16 inches and the overall length must be at least 26 inches for either. Of course it would be wise to make these dimensions slightly longer as noted above to prevent any measuring errors. The BATFE will have a dowel rod to drop in the barrel and come to rest against the close breech face and if the rod protrudes from the muzzle, well lets just say that is not good. You can own these weapons in most states by complying with the NFA guidelines and paying the $200 federal tax.

I have only built one firearm completely from raw material, I say complete but I did start with a chambered barrel blank from Lother Walther.

The only reason I did was that 50 BMG rifles cost around $3500 at the time an I wanted one.

I would likely get a bond arms derringer for what you want and call it a day. If you really want to build you can get barrel liners from Brownells and chromemoly tubing by the foot from wicks aircraft to help with the easy parts.

Nice JOB, how does it shoot.

You could likely get an old, take-off 22 caliber rifle barrel (rifled) for little or nothing at a gunsmith. A good gunsmith re-barrels lots of varmint guns….and usually has old barrels around. This take-off barrel would supply plenty of rifled material for a project like this at a low cost. Still….unless you already have some of the tools…a project like this can get expensive.

In the past I had a carbide rifle button which I used to rifle LOTS (hundreds +) of small aluminum barrels for a product demo tool. First I drilled and reamed the barrel section….then used the carbide button with a heavy dose of STP. The carbide button was fairly inexpensive ($30.? IIRC) and I made a push-rod for use with a shop-press to rifle a 4" barrel section. After rifling I then used a lathe with drill bits and a chamber reamer to make the barrel's chamber. Finally I sectioned part of the aluminum rounds with a side cutting milling tool. Deburred and polished the barrel sections in a tumbler. The sectioned barrels were used to demo my bullet seating depth gauge system. :)

Nice JOB, how does it shoot.

This is a hunk of 1" thick steel plate. The three outer impacts were with AP and the golden color hit in the center was made with API.

Quick but ragged way to drill holes in steel. They really need a lot of chamfering.
