I don't think you could beat the flare gun/insert option myself. Pretty cheap, ready to go, no paper work as such - at least not here.

Good luck and take care.

I am kind of out of the gun scene but noticed mention of that aguila .17. What is that? We used to fire aguila 22s by the thousands (sometimes in a weeekend) and this was the cheapest sheit going. Some would explode out the rim!

Many years ago there was speak of a high velocity caseless ammunition. That's what I thought of when hearing about this .17. Did that ever come to fruition?

Just thinking about the original post. How about black powder? I mean, how many snakes do you encounter? ( killed 7 & 1 for sure got away, maybe 2) A small blunderbust might be cool!

Have though about black powder, problem is how to contain the BB'S before shooting.

Large bore or 410 are not a real option. Some were under the house or near other things I don't want to blow holes in.
Black powder can be loaded down.

5 Of them came out at night, not a lot of fun dealing with them in the dark. & 4 Or 5 of them were under the house. Not real interested in shooting holes in the plumbing & such. Also not a lot of room to use a long gun.

Being home /hand made does not really mean unsafe. Just being store bought, does not necessarily mean safe.

You just need a "wad" on top of the shot. It could be tight fitting card (paper) stock, or a little melted wax.

Bad image.
Using a flare gun on a rat snake in a cluttered wooden shed.

I'll have to check with my brother in law. 30+ years ago I bought him some black powder gun kits. ($25 / $30 at the time). He may still have 1 or 2.

I have a nice little .32 long colt / Colt pistol. It's from the teen's or 1920's. Hate to abuse it as it has a history. LA police chief gave it to a doctor that made house calls with a horse & buggy in bad neighborhoods. 32. S&W (shorts - like a .22 short) work well and are pretty quiet. maybe convert some to shot shells.

I have only built one firearm completely from raw material, I say complete but I did start with a chambered barrel blank from Lother Walther.

The only reason I did was that 50 BMG rifles cost around $3500 at the time an I wanted one.

I would likely get a bond arms derringer for what you want and call it a day. If you really want to build you can get barrel liners from Brownells and chromemoly tubing by the foot from wicks aircraft to help with the easy parts.
That looks like it hurts when you shoot it. How much does it weigh?

As bcp explained, a shorter version of the HM2. I bought a .17 caliber liner and an HM2 reamer to work on an old single shot .22 rifle. There was nearly a foot of leftover liner, so I relined an extra Buck Mark barrel with it. The HM2 liner worked OK for the Aguila.

What I really wanted was an HM2 barrel for the Buck Mark. However, after consulting with others who were experimenting with the same idea, found the HM2 was just too peppy for the mass of the slide on a stock Browning. Rather than butchering a slide to nearly double its weight I took the easy way out.

What is the muzzle velocity of the .17?

For those rattlers, maybe just a weedeater with a saw blade!
