If you get stopped by the state police or even the locals they will check your GVWR and if you are overloaded you're toast. They won't let you drive and will tow truck and trailer away,,, plus the fine will be very expensive. If you were to get into an accident and were overloaded,,, plan to spend some quality time in jail.

In IL not only can all law enforcement pull you over for possibly overweight, They can either call in a trooper with portable scales, they may also excort you to the local weigh station to check your weights. they have also been known to set up portable scales down the road from scrap metal buyers, and well as set up next to grain elevators to check everything going into the elevator. Three years ago got a farmer pulling a grain cart to the elevator. Grain cart weighed 72000, but because it was a single axle, max single axle weight can't exceed 36000. Cost the farmer close to $100,000 in fines.

Are you talking about one of them newer big float tire buggies?? That are rated to haul 1100 or so bushel??

If it is indeed ticket able, how are they even legal for sale??

And end result is still less ground pressure than most other vehicles on the road.

What about the new tracked buggies??

We're getting a bit carried away here. Explain how an overweight situation leads to $100K in fines... which is not even remotely possible. And how do you get 72,000 lbs in a grain cart... Maybe if you filled it with lead.

I take that back, 72,000 lbs is indeed possible.... wow.

Yep, some of them big 2-wheeled buggies are ~1100-1200 bushel. A bushel of beans is 60# and a bushel of corn is 56#

So 1100 bushel of beans is 66,000# then add the buggy itself

I see this site as the farm tractor site, not the legal, law, government rules site. I guess I see it differently than you.

TBN has been, is, and always will be a site focused on;

1. People sharing their experiences with all things related to tractors.
2. People helping people with same, which includes keeping them out of trouble, based on an individuals experience, which includes safety and legal troubles.

By and large, the discussion starter is almost always tractor related, except for specific forums, where non-tractor related topics are discussed, where polite discussions threads about 'legal, law, government rules', as well as other topics, are allowed.

What is legal and safe to haul is entirely appropriate in a forum about hauling tractors and trailers, often on public roads.

If that doesn't meet your requirements, perhaps this forum, or TBN, is not for you.

Instead of telling other people not to post what you don't feel meets your definition of what should be discussed on this site, send a PM to Muhammad, the site owner. If you have a complaint about a specific post, report it and it will be addressed, as appropriate.

I think those grain carts are meant just to hold the grain until it can be loaded into a truck for hauling. Most of them have an auger attached to them also. Of course I've seen them going down the road loaded up. I know in Illinois the fines are based on how over weight you are. It can start getting expensive in a hurry.

I am not sure on the overweight fee based system where the fine starts, but over a certain amount is like $2-3 a pound.

In the case of the farmer in my original post. the elevator is on the West side of a spur track, one the east side of the track there is a parking lot. The ISP set up a portable scale system in the parking lot, and was weighing every vehicle coming in. The grain carts were originally designed to haul the grain from the harvester to the edge of the field, and then dump into into a truck for transport to the elevator. Three years ago, the farmer across the road from my house harvested his wheat, and then was put in a semi from the local elevator for delivery. On one load he grossed 111,000 according to the weight ticket from the elevator.

I forgot to add that if your are over by 2000# or 1000# with a CDL your are also subject to arrest.

this is from a state where throwing a cigarette butt out a car window is a crime subject upto 6 months in jail, and a third offense is a felony.
