Thanks to all of you for your thoughts & suggestions. Greatly appreciated.
I had no idea that a hand gun with a 4"/6" barrel could be considered a shot gun. Talk about a stretch!

I'll call a gun shop or 2 & see if I can get an old barrel or 2. Seems like a good way to go.

Don't want to buy a new or even used gun, do not what it registered.

.22 Shorts in my rifle are almost as quiet as a pellet rifle. Second choice my be a pellet pistol. Most practical, in the long run.

Jut wanted the fun & challenge of building one. Maybe one of those home built kit guns would be fun???

you can get sub caliber devices .. inserts for things like mil surp flare guns. the ones I see have 22lr as an offering.

these fit the standard 26.5mm flare guns. and happen to be 45lc or 410ss

from the way the batf letter reads. owning a flare gun is legal and not regulated by atf.... owning the sub caliber device is leagal and not regulated by the atf. thus no 'paper' on either. putting the 2 together makes a firearm.. .. thus someone prohibited from owning a firearm could not make the firearm.. and probably due to constructive posession.. should not own both parts either.

if you are permitted to own a gun.. and no state law bars you from owning or making a gun.. you are probably ok with this route.. and safer too.. than making your own..

you read the rules and your state rules and decide for yourself though... it's on you to do the right thing. not us..

And just so you know, a Title 1 firearm is a regular firearm. Where Gun Control Act of 1968 rules apply. So a "regular, ordinary gun"

Can I ask a dumb question.? In your state may individuals transfer firearms without paperwork as long as neither are a dealer.?
As near as I can tell there is no restriction in your state. You will need to check that out for yourself though.

Up here, we can legally own fully automatic "airsoft" guns that would tear a snake to shreds. And apparently the kids think they are fun. Basically full auto bb gun. Some of these things get serious muzzle velocity.

As much as I like to tinker and build things, I prefer buying firearms. I don't hesitate to do work on them myself. One fun thing I did was reline and chamber a Buck Mark barrel for .17 Aguila. For playing around with mini shotguns I have loaded .38 and .44 shot capsules. The .44's didn't pattern very well but the .38's worked OK in one of my Detective Special snubbies. It seems like perhaps the longer barrels may start the capsule spinning and throw the shot wide.

For heavier and at least somewhat effective small shotguns it's hard to beat a .45/.410 Contender like the one in the pic below that one of the kids snapped while we were in the back yard shooting clays. He poked fun at my quick reload spare round holder.

The other is a Taurus Public Defender 5-shot .410. Unlike the Contender it doesn't pattern tight enough for shooting clays. There are a number of factory loads available for .410 handguns ranging from fine shot to stacked buckshot and composite loads. My one 90 pound daughter-in-law thoroughly enjoyed the Taurus with .410 loads.

I am kind of out of the gun scene but noticed mention of that aguila .17. What is that? We used to fire aguila 22s by the thousands (sometimes in a weeekend) and this was the cheapest sheit going. Some would explode out the rim!

Many years ago there was speak of a high velocity caseless ammunition. That's what I thought of when hearing about this .17. Did that ever come to fruition?

Just thinking about the original post. How about black powder? I mean, how many snakes do you encounter? A small blunderbust might be cool!

The 17 Aguila is a 17 caliber on the 22LR case, so it is about 1/8 shorter than the 17 Mach 2, which is built on the 22 Stinger case.
