Towns hire private contractors to supplement their plowing functions. Some have some pretty big contracts.
Also, the small private plow contractors can make a lot of money on shopping center and business parking lots.

I just don't believe a snow plow truck would work here. I don't see any shopping centers (here)paying to have their lots cleared as, no one would be or could be out shopping in this mess anyway. Ya'lls snow (I believe) is a lot different than what we get. Our snow quickly turns to a sheet of ice on the roads and unless you have something special, it's just very difficult to drive on the roads. If you don't try to get where you need to be when this stuff hits, it's very difficult to try to get to where you need to be. As I stated in a previous post. I got stuck on a job I was trying to wrap up and just got caught. From where I was to get home on a normal day would have taken 30-35 min. Because I got caught with my pants down , It took me about 4 hrs to get home. Glad we only get this stuff every few yrs, instead of every yr

I sure wish you guys & gals that are use to this stuff would keep it.

Pictures on TV this morning from Atlanta. Whole city is basically a giant parking lot! Some things never change. Lived there in the 70's and flurries were enough to shut down the city.

a lot of the slipping on those roads is due to the fact that they dont have equipment to spread sand and or salt. Our roads get mag chloride or salt sprays that help traction. outlining roads and areas with treacherous curves are spread with gravel.

All parking lots have snow removal equipment camped out all winter on the lot.

I have an on again off again plow accounts with several neighbors and our homeowners association. This year i didnt elect to do the association roads cause i was too busy with my contracting company....no loss as weve only had 3 plows all winter season.

I have elected to do driveways for those needing it. It snowed 3" last night with another 5-7" due over the day/night. Well see if that happens

I wont even think of plowing/blowing snow till we get near 6" on the ground.

Most times if there predicting very heavy snowfall we plow after every 4-6" lift of snow.....either before the school bus arrives or before evening commute. I got up this morning and theres 3" on the ground and its still falling...but its not worth the effort to plow yet.

Personally, i love snow. I like the quiet and peaceful nature of the stuff. I love being able to hook up the horses to my sleighs and going for a drive. This year its been a real disappointment ...so little snow. The mountain ski resorts are having a crappy season. theres not enough snow pack to refill our lakes after the drawdown. It really sucks.

But the weatherman keeps promising us more snow this season....well have to see if their usual 70% wrong prediction stats hold up.

I think your snow is slippery because the roads and ground beneath them are not frozen. Our early season snows when the roads are not frozen, but the air temp falls below freezing, are slicker than snot too.

Once everything gets cold enough, the ice doesn't form on the road surface.

Nothing worse than warm Ice around here, people do not slow down enough for that first snow and are in the ditch around here also.

Yep, gets a lot of the first-year drivers and those who ought to know better too. Always a rash of accidents with first winter weather of the season.

A lot of us in the north country get worn out by winters and end up moving south or snowbirding. Because we can't take the hot summers either. So at least you southerners only have to put up with this on few occasions.

Hang in there - it will pass soon!

I doubt if many southern folks realize how much work and expense goes into winter climates.

Our town budget, for example, winter road maintenance is a big item. Then the summer road maintenance needed because winter busted up the roads is big too. Roads are our largest expense after schools. Property, fuel excise, and state income tax has to pay for it somehow.

I think if our roads and bridges had the service life they have in the south, and we didn't spend a small fortune clearing them every winter, our tax rates wouldn't be much different than some of those in the south.

The mayor of Atlanta said their response was very good????? Wonder if the citizens agree.....I know CNN sure doesn't.

Absolutely. It's ok & maybe exhiliarting when we're young. But year after year of this wears you down. Who's to say which is better - live industriously all year & burn our, or be more laid back & don't burn out?

Seems to be as much circumstances as choice. But I know I'm sure starting to feel it and I'm 'only' 55!
