That's good to hear, they were way behind in the rustproofing department. Perhaps they can keep up with Ford and Chevy now...

You're kidding right?
We fill our road potholes around here with rust and rust chunks of chevy silverados

Unless I only drove to the mall (a big part of today's market), that feature alone would get me into a Super Duty right there. Rgds, D.

Just FYI my 02 f250 had to have the front hubs rebuilt both auto and the manual didn't work. The auto part went out on my 08 f350 and my dads 08 F350 had to get out and manually lock the hubs every time we needed 4 wd. Have had an 01 ram 1500 an 08 ram 1500 a 2010 ram 2500. Currently have a 2012 ram 2500 and a 2013 power wagon never on issue with the 4wd system in any of the rams.

In our climate (heavy salt) you needed to keep up maintenance on manual hubs - that I can live with, including planning it as seasonal maintenance.

Messing around trying to find a vacuum leak at -30, No Thanks !

Yeah I've had numerous mechanics and ford dealerships say you need to turn the hubs in and drive 30 mins or so every 3 months. The 02 hubs wouldn't even turn when the auto part went out. Both 08's were turned every 3 months and still got hard to turn and the auto went out on both before 80,000 miles and I know of 6 more that I can think of off the top of my head that have had hub issues of different levels. To me there is clearly an issue with ford hubs. Like I said never had an issue with any of my rams. My dad has a 97 ram 3500 4x4 never had a hub issue with it either. Can you even get a manual shift for the 4x4 in a ford now? I know you can with a ram my 2012 is a dual stick and my power wagon has a manual shift for 4x4 as well.

Yes. My neighbor got one this year where he works. F250 with a gas engine, manual shift transfer case, manual hubs, the "work truck" package (vinyl interior, cheap radio, etc).

Yeah after I posted I remembered my 2011 f450 box truck has a manual shift 4x4. I remember years ago don't remember the model but one of my friends had a chevy with the floor shift for the 4x4 but all it did was activate a switch. Seemed very dumb to me taking up the floor board for a big shifter but not getting the benefit of a real shifter.

I have owned about a dozen ford 4x4 trucks. I use my 4x4 weekly. Never a single issue. Not one extra dime spent other than front axle and transfer case fluid changes.

Same is true for my Nissan, Dodge, and DMAX. My other GM cost me a ton when the transfer case went and also took out the rear drive shaft.

Aren't most all brands pretty good now?

For the most part, yes. The difference between the most reliable and least reliable is very slim now.

I Agree. Reliability records don't even come into my decision process of buying a new truck in today's world. Cars are a little different story because of the many choices but I don't think there is a bad truck reliability speaking.

The problem with thinking about reliability now is that trucks models are completely and drastically changed every 5 years typically. If something is proven unreliable, it is no longer in production. It is unlikely with today's quality control and extensive testing, that a manufacturer will bring a dud to the market.

A lot of people seem to be scared of all this new technology being implemented today and think the old school simple designs of yesteryear are more reliable. I find reliability has improved each year in the past 30 years. I have not been stranded along side the highway in resent history but 25 years ago carried a toolbox everywhere I went.
