What really needs to be is learning how to do a better job in the same amount of time as others who skip steps..
Thank you!! I completely agree! I have already received one employer was 100% interested In hiring me. He asked me to call back and when he did he told me I was overqualified for what he needed. It was very odd because I had offered to work at 10$ an hour part time repairing his skid steers. What he doesn't realize is yes I don't skip any required steps. I have also devoted my life to helping others. In the summer of 2006 we drove down after hurricane Katrina hit in Texas and we helped repair homes for one week. Everything we did was 100% better than they had. We never asked for money either. I have done countless task like this including volunteering my time to build a Vietnam memorial wall. I don't need any disrespect from employers as I have always worked a hard life to serve others. It's the right thing to do. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. Period. The employer that said he was interested in hiring me after he thought about it and I called back two days later got me thinking how much he had talked me down in pay to ten $ per hour. He said "I don't need no over qualified diesel mechanic repairing my equipment. My equipment does not break. I keep up with my equipment so I does not break." What he didn't realize is I had been polite and let him talk me down to 10$ per hour and I could make that at lowes moving lumber. What he didn't realize is I work hard to serve others in all my spare time. I always try to be a good sameritan to people with a flat tire or with a dead battery I have never met before. I have been disrespected most my life because of how nice i am I used to be easy to walk all over. Now it's not easy to walk all over me. Friends and family have talked me into drawing unemployment . It is the perfect way to find a great job for myself while having money coming in to pay bills. I need to find a job that fits me so I do not waiste my talent. I need to find a job that a employer appreciates my abilitys as well as my high respect for others. Thank you for all your help

Use the unemployment funds as the bridge you need to land a job at an appropriate employer.

If you've never collected benefits before, make sure you keep a detailed logbook of all your job search activities. A detailed Search Log is a really good idea regardless if you are on benefits or not, but you will be expected to be able to provide that information if asked. You likely are doing this already, but it is important enough to repeat the info.

Going to work for somebody who views vocational training as a "problem" would be a waste of time, IMO. Your time would be better spent in a full-time search for a good match. :2cents:

I got my tool box home safely using the 4x10 tilt trailer. Rides low and is a great buy at 40$.

Of course they plowed me in last night and my truck has an open differential. I was able to rock it out most of the way, pack salt under the tires and get straight out. I was spinning my tires on a steep highway hill at 40 miles per hour last night . Good thing I have experience with ice, trucks, and 53 foot vans

It's me again. There is a lot of great advice in this forum. I would like to add a little more. You will probable be too excited to sleep Sunday so if you can get someone reliable to make sure you are up or 2 alarm clocks.
Yes definitely bring some recommendations with you. Bring at least 2 pens and 2 pencils and a small pocket notebook. You live in snow country so make sure you can get there on time. Be prepared to take a drug test. A lot of questions on the written test ( if you have to take one ) or asked by the interviewer will not pertain to your job and some will be off the wall. Just take your time, think about what you are answering. Keep to the point. Answer it truthfully. The social network can kill you so watch what you post any where on line. Don't be surprised if they have you come back for a second or third interview. Hopefully one will get you the job.
You are in a lot of peoples prays.
I read your post about costing you $40.00 to move your tool box. I did not know you bought a tilt bed trailer. You got a great bargain. You might be able to make a few dollars on the side fixing trucks that are broken down on the road. Truckers like to get their rig fixed ASAP. Some times the dispatcher can't get a fix it truck there for a few hours. They need to get going NOW. They will sometimes be willing to pay to get fixed right now.
Just something to think about.

$10/hr???!! Really? I pay my 22 Y.O. son that or more to do things around my property. Don't let fools talk you down, pick a number you feel is fair to both your potential employer and you, and stick by it. If someone doesn't want to pay for your experience and skill, and the fact you own your own tools, walk away. I was paying my skilled Volvo/Saab mechanic $8/hr. in 1987. Our shop labor rate was around $28-32/hr. What's certified mechanics work going for in shops today? Labor rates are: $90-100+/hr or more.
You have to forget about your philosophy of life and how things ought to be done, and only talk about how you can do the job the employer details for you, nothing more, nothing less. Enthusiasm yes, gung ho, no. Excited about the prospect of working on their equipment yes, race pit mechanic, no. Temper your world view enough to get the job, then show your skill level. Climb the ranks by being dependable and ready to take on what they throw your way. Don't focus on what others are doing and keep your head down, focused on what you're doing. You can be a world beater and do- gooder on YOUR time, nothing wrong with that.
Good luck.

Minimum wage here in Ontario has just been raised to $11.00/hour!

Not intending to be mean, but I gotta point out that in MOST cases (and certainly including myself) we are all our own worst enemies!

Listen to what Coyote Machine is saying, good advice. Remember, this guy wants to hire someone who is good, not someone who is "good and cheap". Request a fair wage and be prepared to support that number.

I don't know if it works, but if I was looking for employment, I would consider offering to work for free for two weeks, then expect a decent pay if they consider me worth it. In other words, put your money where your mouth is.

ABSOLUTELY, don't fall for that, we will start you at such and such and then in three months we will see. If the pay rate is a set rate after the probation period, GET THAT IN WRITING! I have been through this. Doesn't happen, doesn't happen and then comes the annual review and you get a pittance!

Employers will pay you as little as they possibly can and like I said before, it's MOST unfortunate that you are in such a poor bargaining position when you don't already have a job! You should have LEFT that job on your own volition!

I had one job (in the telecom field) where they jerked me around, particularly my boss, who got raises and benefits for himself, but not me. They were going to give me a very, very small raise. I found another higher paying job and quit! Next thing, they offered to pay me something like fifty percent more, plus retroactive pay, back to that probationary period when they said they would pay me more. I WAS ELLATED! Well played! And I wasn't even a very good employee at that!

EDIT: I guess the point I am trying to make is that too often in life, we don't get was is fair or owed to us but often what we negotiate for. Funny, UNIONS just came to mind! lol

You know, good people/workers dont need unions. I am a union worker for a industrial plant. Im a apprentice millwright. I didnt get to my position cause I was lazy, I did cause im efficent and not affraid to work. This is was my first union job and the 13 years before that I never got fired from a job cause of those facts. Never sell yourself short, and you cant always expect to start at the top. Not saying yiu are trying too. I have been pulling wrenches and swinging hammers for almost 17 years. I started at the bottom and worked my way up. Im sure your calling will be found sooner or later. But ill say this, never sell yourself short to bennifet someone else, it always comes back to bite you in the end.

One who works for low wage (dispproportionaly low wage to your work position) doesn't value his own work. I wouldn't work for low wage. You will just get stuck there. They should pay you going wage in the area.

If you are asked what pay do you expect - tell them the appropriate going wage for the job. The reply you get from the employer will indicate how they value their employees.
I would not agree to work for no wages for any length of time - the employer won't pay you for doing nothing, so why would you work for nothing. Your charitable work does not come under this comment and don't mix the two up.
There is supposed to be a shortage of skilled workers and tradesmen, so eventually you will get what yoou want. In the meantime just pick up part time or temporary work to get you by. If you are drawing unemployment benifits take advantage of it - that is where some of your tax money goes.
Good luck with your job search - you should do well, just be patient.
