Say What ????
I will double hr3's "say what"

Dude you really need to learn more about Carbon Monoxide before you kill yourself.

If it were not for a CO detector and an upstairs bedroom i would not be typing this today, so believe me fuel oil aka diesel fuel does have co as a byproduct of combustion.

Hey industrial! If a unit is designed to burn diesel it will burn it as well as kerosene and also just as clean.

Do not burn diesel in a unit that is not designed for it. My friends is not so I only burn kerosene. Diesel can clog up a heater that's only designed for the kero. Here kerosene is 4.30$ Per gallon while diesel is 3.80$ or so. I keep kerosene sometimes for starting fires and such but most of the time I keep diesel as it is very easy to get at the pump and also can be used in Diesel engines more readily .

On the heater itself it says it can burn #1 fuel oil but my friend asked me not to, he said to only burn kerosene as it will stay cleaner this way.

I kept thinking about buying a mr heater portable buddy but I'm not sure about that right now. At a max of 9,000 btu and propane bottles at 3$ per gallon it's pretty outrageous. My dad and I have refilled 1 pound bottles for years off a bulk tank but I still like the kerosene and diesel units. I have read more than once the propane units are less costly to run.

This heater would pay for itself as right now I'm trying to buy a house but do not own right now. Buying fuel is still much cheaper than taking anything to the shop. I service my own stuff and it sure pays off and gives me a large sense of accomplishment !!

If your talking about the ones that sit on top of a lp tank and look like a sunflower they work great but its a different type of heat, there radiant heaters so they heat objects not the air. Sort of like the sun that can pass thru thousands of miles of subzero space but still warm what it hits here on earth.

100% true! At my last job we had radiant heaters in the ceiling that. Were fed off of natural gas. Even though the ceiling was 35 foot tall they heated everything including the floor. The floor was so warm!!

Moving away from my dad's garage has been hard but it was for college and work. At this point I would like to stay warm while working on my stuff behind closed doors.

I just dragged my heater out to revisit my problem. Have a fire going, but it's still bitterly cold and I want to bring the place up to temp a little quicker.

Mine is a 55,000 BTU Reddy Heater. I guess a small one by some standards. But I always found it more then enough heat.

YES, the label does say # 1 fuel oil or Kerosene. Never knew that, because I thought Ir read in the destructions that one is to use only Kerosene. Maybe I got confused with the # 1 Fuel Oil business. Now Diesel and home heating fuel come out of the same compartment on the truck, around here at least!

Anyway, I just changed the burnernozzle and can't get it to light. The spark is fierce so that is not the problem. I even took a propane torch and it won't light the atomized mixture. I am thinking "water" so I am going back out with some water gauging paste. If that is the case, it would explain why the thing kept flaming out. It hasn't been used much in the last ten years so maybe it got its share of condensation.

I would really like to get it operational again. It's handy to have for thawing out a machine or baking paint when the summer is over.

EDIT: Well I tried the paste. NADA! Not a drop of water. This thing is really starting to annoy me! Nothing worse then spending time and energy trying to repair your tools when you should be working on something else. I have spent so much time farting around with this thing I am just about ready to run over the ready heater! That's always been my approach. Destroy it, and it will never waste another second of your time!

I don't imagine that Kerosene has a shelf life right? I mean, it's a pretty well refined oil. I thought about just draining the tank and putting in diesel, but IF I am going to fart with it any more, I would rather do so with Kerosene. Much cleaner on the hands and so forth!

take to top cover off and check the fuel uptake hose. there are alot of these units that hit the market with windshield wiper grade hoses used. Replace with the new yellow all fuel lines. might be all thats needed. Also check the spark system at the same time. I had to do this to my neighbors reddi hesate units. both had their lined dissolved. its actually only a 20 minute repair (after you buy the hose that is)

The rubber was kind of hard, when I replaced the burner nozzle.

I will replace the fuel lines

Just don't understand why I have vaporized fuel that I can't light with a torch.

Anyway, I threw a few anti-freeze jugs in the stove, threw the main switch and am excercising my genset to heat the house and make some surplus heat in the shop. Kinda noisy though but I am up to 2 degrees C which is warm compaired to outside. Still havn't got to, what I am supposed to work on!

theres also a filter in the tank...at the end of the rubber uptake hose. on my unit the burner (ignitor) stays lit...not just sparks like a torch lighter. Diesel fuel is hard to ignight.

I bought an almost brand new Ready Heater (200,000 btu) for $50 at an estate sale. If you have such sales in your area, practically all farms have one or more. I can heat up a 20 x 80 barn aisle way up to 60 degrees with one sliding door 1/4 open. The best use of them is to warm your tools. A super cold wrench will almost cripple your hand(s). I just use pump diesel in it. Plug it in, push the button and set the shutoff temperature. I had to remove the tractor starter last week and I wound up with my coat off in the barn in 5 degree outside temperature. There is the fume factor, but starting the snowplow tractor in the barn is 10 times worse for fumes.

My previous method of outside shop repair in winter was to heat up a 2' section of railroad rail with an old Sears A.C welder. Parking your tools on that sucker made life easier back in the day.

Go to Find Estate Sales to check for stuff like this in your state. Most scroungers at estate sales are looking for furniture, glassware, antiques and collectables. They probably won't even show the tools and farm equipment, but its usually there. They are much better than auctions. On the last day, prices are usually 1/2 of that marked or 'make us an offer'. There is always Craigslist. Best time to buy is SUMMER.:D

i let my farrier use mine last time he shod the horses (1-1/2 weeks back). it was -10F and windy. we closed the barn doors and fired up the unit. i think i made his day.

didnt discount the shoes though.

Funny thing was he came by today to check on my older foundered mare today. he saw me racing the sleigh in the arena and i gave him a ride. he LOVED it. said he had no idea those old sleighs were so comfortable. there one big spring wit a padded seat

I can't get it to work. I wonder if Kerosene looses it's volitility with age. This stuff might be ten years old. I did a Google search and could find no scientific answers, just ideas and notions.

I put some on a stick and lit it with a torch. It seemed to burn.

I still can't believe that I can have atomized kerosene and air blowing out of the nozzle and can't ignite it with a propane torch. Something doesn't seem right about that.

The spark plug is going like crazy but there seems to be so much voltage there that it doesn't just spark at the gap but in numerous places.

Maybe I need to learn a thing or two about oil burners!
