Liability....WHAT liability?

They might not want to be liable if they damage the tire (bead falls apart when they break the bead?).
I had that problem getting a transponder key cut for the wife's car a while back.
The guy was worried that I would do as someone had done recently and want him to buy me a replacement key if he miscut it.
I finally convinced the guy that I wasn't going to worry too much if he miscut one key as three keys ($7 each from ebay) plus his fee to cut 3 keys ($5/key) were less than a third of the price that the dealership wanted for 1 key (over $130 IIRC).

Quite often the last professional to look at something is on the hook whether the actual fault is theirs or not!

And the latest Liability BS. Woman Gets Awarded $70,000 because she burned her mouth on Soup at a Tim Hortons (Canadian Chain Coffee and Doughnut shop). She had sued for 2 mil!

Maybe Hortons should have stuck to what they were good at!

Sadly your spot on. Some ambulance chasing lawyer probably sued a tire shop for not replacing a tire that the customer did NOT want replaced and the vehicle owner had to blame someone other than their self for their wreck due to an old tire blowing out. If you can be awarded a million dollars for spilling coffee on yourself at a drive thru in a U.S. court case ..... Well, y'all get the point.

Just FYI, - The rest of the story -

Actually Stella Liebeck only got half a million. All she asked for initially was to pay her medical bills which were over 10 thousand dollars. McDonald's responded with an $800 offer. In the previous 10 years McDonald's had received more than 700 complaints of burns from hot beverages. Since the lawsuit McDonald's has reduced the temperature of their hot beverages 10˚ (down from a high of 180-190˚ - about the temperature of your cars radiator). Stella Liebeck died in 2004 at the age of 91 - (12 years after her burns which required skin grafts).

That is very interesting. Thank You. We mostly all figure (incorrectlyu) that the news reports the facts.

Around here tire stores will not even touch a tire more than 6 years old. They are a ticking time bomb after that and that's where the Liability comes in.

I deal with over 200 tires on the equipment I maintain. I agree with the tire experts. I would not touch it either.

Chris

I agree with Chris.

A 14 year old tire is just plain not safe, no matter how good the tread looks. I had a 7 year old tire on a trailer blow out a couple of years ago. It had 90+ % of the original tread and looked really good, right up until the second that a piece of sidewall the size of my fist flew off. It was a two axle trailer and I limped into the campsite about 2 miles ahead and replaced all four tires that weekend.

I have ended up doing my own tire work on my antique and collector vehicles.

Tire shops just don't want to bother and will come up with any excuse... many of these tires have no date codes!

I needed two tires that held air to move a car from a back pasture where it had been abandoned...

Went to a tire shop and offered to buy two old tires and no go... then went to a wrecker and they refused to sell me a rim with an old tire.

In the end I borrowed two mounted tires from a friend that let me drag the car out so I could dispose of it.

A rancher friend has a 70's 3/4 GMC 4wd pickup in his barn... he wants to get rid of it... it belongs to his son who paid to have a new engine installed and then left for the service and it's been parked 15 years... thinking it might be good to use for wood, gravel and concrete and will check it out... going in the tires are at least 15 years old if not 20 or 25...

As far as I know there is no law... it's just the business practice of of the sellers...

The more things you can do for yourself the better.

Well, they didn't manufacture or mount the tire or install the rim on a hub so where is the liability????

The liability on them is when you or someone you loan a 13 year old spare tire to inevitably blows the tire, you would likely blame them since they're the last one with a tool on it.

14 years for a tire is double what research has shown to be the typical age at which tires start falling apart. I forget the figures but after 6 years the blowrate skyrocketed to something like 60% or higher. I would probably be worried about touching it too.

Only half a mill?? Guess the lawyer got 50%. Thanks for the whole story. Wow.. $800 offer. Come on Micky D. We know you can do better than that.

yup -- I ran in to this issue too. I am sick of the high prices to remount old tires or last year snow tires back on and balance. From this point on I do my own tire service. Got one of those harbor freight manual tire changer and its worth the price in gold . I cant tell you how many times I used it on my two hands. I dont leave it permanently mounted in my garage floor, all I have is two bolt metal anchors ready to use left in floor. 5 mins and I'm ready to use.
These days it pays to do things yourself anyways.
