Snow & Ice

South of the Mason Dixon Line but in the mountains, we've got 4 inches down and up to a foot to come. I'll fire up the JD when it stops and do my mile-long gravel drive. I took a blade up it this morning pulling gravel back into the center, the gravel scraped out during the last snow. I plow with a FEL and scraper blade, and some LED lights screwed to a board atop the ROPS (plugged into the 3038e's convenient work light circuit) - and it does fine. It would be neat to have a blower and/or snow blade that makes so much sense for you guys in the snow-belt, but it doesn't make economic sense for places where significant snowfall occurs but a few times a year. Anyway, being retired, I don't have to go anywhere anyway.

I think your snow is slippery because the roads and ground beneath them are not frozen. Our early season snows when the roads are not frozen, but the air temp falls below freezing, are slicker than snot too.

Once everything gets cold enough, the ice doesn't form on the road surface.

Do you want pictures of the 4 to 11ft high snow drifts the snowblowers cut through to re-open our roads? Last Friday evening we had 4-5 inches of fresh snow on the roads. The municipality didn't bring the ploughs out as there wasn't enough snow to be worth being bothered with. Everybody made it to work on time as usual.

A technique I find useful for driving when temps are near freezing and the roads are wet is to look carefully at the tracks made by the tires on the vehicle ahead of you.

Tires squeegee water away from the tread high profile areas and leave water were the grooves ran. You have seen that I'm sure on rainy roads, you can see the tire trails.

Ice does not squeegee away and the tire track becomes less distinct or disappears entirely. When the track is not distinct, slow down--a lot.

You can also look for road freezing by the lack of water spray being carried by tires of cars running next to you, or in the on coming lane.

Boy, I sure am glad AL Gore made the HVAC industry replace the old refrigerant with ozone depleting chemicals with the new non ozone depleting refrigerant. I can already see a big difference in our climate down South. This is the 2 nd. in 2 weeks time we've had winter weather with ice and snow... 4'' last night !!:shocked: !. Wasn't that a wonderful ripoff perpetrated on consumers? Y2K was another one. Gotta be Y2K compliant or we cannot do business with you!.. sheesh.. Scams.. all Scams. The company I was with at the time, made tons of money on Y2K. We ripped off people right and left with upgrades to their phone equipment., some as much as 50K each..

Just so you know, they're doing away with R410A (no joking) Don't know what the replacement is yet as the time frame is too far out there.

Yes, I know. Talk is/has been it will be 407C . Time will tell what the new magic liquid will be
