End of ethanol?

   / End of ethanol? #31
Watched a tv program noto long ago about how Brazil uses ethanol (IIRC 100%) made from sugar cane and they import zero oil. I don't likethe ethanol either but what are they doing differnet? Does the government subsidize it? Are the carburetors for there market made to handle it? If it can be made from something we don't eat is it viable? Will that use space in the field for something we do eat? One thing is for sure, oil will not be around forever...

One thing they are doing different is that their government is NOT taxing ethanol as it falls in alcohol category. Refineries here mix it with regular gas to make it undrinkable to avoid taxes which is why it costs more IMHO here. At first I was excited that we were adding ethanol to the gas supply to reduce our oil dependence, but the production is not increasing, farmers not jumping at opportunity to make money, and we are creating more problems now then before..

I know how you feel.. I bought into the ethanol hype at first too, thinking it seemed like a good idea... I can kick my own butt now.

Allowing ethanol to be eliminated would be smart. Try to name one time the government did something smart. You would have to have either an amazing memory or imagination to come up with one.

Let's see: My car gets 6 mpg less than than b.e. I've wrecked my rototiller, motor cycles and chainsaws with the stuff. I guess we don't really care about the "starving" as its more important to make profits and congressional "fringe benefits" by using food to make this. What the heck, its ok to charge $19 for a bag of grain that used to cost $9. Just how much have we reduced pollution and foreign dependence with this junk as opposed to cars approaching never heard of before gas mileage. This is just another money grab by the few well placed and well healed individuals in our government and corporate world. If any of this "rumor" can come to fruition, I'd only be too happy but I am pretty jaded like the rest of us. I've written to all 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse that we call our 2 representatives and 2 senators as well as the e.p.a about this and have never received a reply. Like what? its still a big secret that this stuff does next to nothing and is more damaging than advantageous?

That pretty well sums it up.

i read sometime ago that it takes 3 gal of fossile fuel to plant, harvest and deliver the grain to the refinery to make 1 gal of enthanol.

Unfortunately, it's not up to date. Be sure to call the ones listed to make sure they still have the ethanol free gas.

The puregas.org website listed several in my area having non ethanol gas. But when I called them to make sure, none of them had it. They did at one time but don't now. They said the refineries in this area stopped making it because of pressure from the gov.

This is the case here also. 3 years ago it became impossible to find. Even our marinas can't get it and have switched over to 89 octane with 10% ethanol.

I think ethanol is here to stay in our fuel. Sucks, but look what has happened to diesel and the sulfur content.

Govment' may change the required ethanol percentage in gasoline, but its gunna always be there.

I've been treating all my gas with marine grade sta-bil or sea-foam that I have for the mower, chainsaws and all the small engine equipment. That sucks to have to buy fuel treatment on top of the fuel but everything "gas" I run is still running fine....

Except the little mantis tiller. Some how I parked it for the winter without nothing done to it. It runs but not like it did:ashamed:
