Cutting out flooring close to a wall question

For this job I think I'd start out with my sawzall and a really long metal cutting blade to cut through all the nails. Then see if the wood will just pull out.

Eddie
That's about what I did when I replaced a deck that I had put in w/ ring-shank 30 years ago.

Cut a strip of floor out so you can slide the sawsall between the joists and the floor then work down the joist cutting nails with the sawsall . Leaves the nail in the hole.

I tried chiseling out some wood flooring one time...a huge PIB. Had an older Craftsman 19.2 volt cordless saw and modified it so it would cut flush to a wall. Yes it is dangerous to use, yes, I am careful using it and never lend it out.

Got started today since the weather has cleared. This is going to be a huge painful lesson. The plumbing stack is screw together abs and I had to use a hammer and cement chisel to unscrew the flange. We are in it for the long haul. The girl friend is helping me and so far she is unshaken by this mess.

Did you say this is just a temporary repair and that you plan on tearing down the house in the future? Is the problem that the floor is rotted? Why not just soak it all in bleach to kill any mold and odor, then just lay a sheet of 3/4 plywood over the entire floor? I'm all for doing something right, but if it's temporary, then doing it right just means making it usable for the time being.

Yeah Eddie. The floor was so soft and sagging,I feel through it while tearing it out. This place will be torn down next year.We are here until I finish remodeling my dad's old place and move in there. We are shooting for a fall to move, hopefully mid September this year.

Looks pretty punky. I would cut that out and lay down new sheet of OSB then vinyl over it. But it doesn't need to be up to the standard that you are probably doing at your Dad's place.

Yep.I tore out the old osb and I can't find true 1/2 or 3/4 inch osb. There was 1/4 inch bc ply on top of the osb to make the floor level.I'm having a hard time getting the floor close enough for vinyl. It's off by 1/8th of an inch.I'm not expecting perfection on this but I'd like to be a little closer.I got 100sqft of vinyl tile for $19.I started this friday.Finished the tear out and hunting for a new toilet flange.Mine is one of those short screw in abs flanges.I had to get a screw in pvc coupler and a 4 to 3 inch flange.I searched two counties before finding the right stuff.Today we hunt for proper dimension ply.I got one sheet cut and fit before I lost day light.Still haven't cut the hole for the flange. That will happen tomorrow and hopefully finish everything up.This has been a crappy project in more ways than one.

On a remodel for my Dad in a very old house I had a similar problem. I used a filler product to taper the edge. I don't remember what the product was. I troweled on and smoothed it out with a broad knife and then sanded it smooth when it dried. I tapered it for about a 12 inch run.

I know what you're talking about.I can't remember the name of the stuff either. They used in in my others house under the kitchen and bathroom vinyl.Wood was solid just has some swags in it.
