What happened to This Old House? omg

The show was better once. Having grown up in a 200 year old historic house, I got some good ideas. Now it's just good for introducing some neat technologies - usually technologies I will never utilize because I can't afford them - or they simply will never pay the freight. Many of the home repair shows are impractical, or illustrate how to pull the wool over someone's eyes, like the flipper shows. But they are ok as background noise while I do other things. Actually most mainstream TV seems to be just background noise.

These arent cheap houses by any stretch, even on the old series.

Me and SWMBO just finished watching the series that featured the "the Cambridge House" from 2005. As an example of what they spend, it had a custom spiral staircase that was $85,000. This house is valued currently at $4.1 Million and is in a neighborhood of multi-million dollar homes. 77 Sparks St, Cambridge, MA 02138 - Zillow Funny thing about that house was they spent money hand over fist, yet didnt do the one relatively cheap thing I would have done first, and that is raise the house to street level. The house was in a bowl and suffered from water damage because of it.

Other than maybe the first few episodes, I dont believe there has been a "cheap" fixer-upper on the show. Could be wrong.

You guys are way to cheap and serious. Fixer-upper on TOH too funny. I love to see how folks who have way too much $$$ spend it. Having spend 7 years fixing up an old house on a shoe string budget it is fun to see how it could have been with no budget and never having to wait for $$ to do something.

When THO was sold to commercial TV, about 15 years ago, and Norm stopped doing the actual work on the project, is when the show stopped being a do it your self show to over the top out of the common man way of thinking. Remember it is 22 minutes of entertainment NOTHING more. Like I said it has been on for 35 years someone must be watching.

TOH on PBS is full of "commercials" in the form of program "sponsors" and product placement. There are a few minutes at the start and a few minutes at the end of the program to thank those "sponsors". You think those guys drive the brand of truck they drive by random choice? There are lots of promo tools during the show.

It's all advertising but dressed up a little different.

Around here PBS is half ads...
