This may or may not be related, but lately I've been having problems with people who deny what they say.
I've talked to salesmen on the phone and when confronted in person I hear "I never said that, or You misinterpreted me"
This is frustrating. I hate to confront people and say Yeah, but put it in writting, maybe I ought to carry a tape recorder.
chuck,
As I'm several pages behind on this thread, my reaction your text (quoted above) will come as out of context to whatever is currently being discussed at the current terminus of the thread. So I do apologize for what will almost certainly appear to be "off topic" in that space. However, as I feel having a dealer stand behind their representations is of paramount importance, in this "business," (be it a hobby or an income-stream for you) I hope there is general agreement that my post is (generally) relevant. If not, I do apologize....
But I REALLY appreciate your taking the time to express your dismay over "...problems problems with people who deny what they say."
In fact, I would not have taken the time to write so extensively about it, except for the fact that
YOU'RE the ONLY person I've ever heard independently express their frustration "with people who deny what they say." Ever. So your post was very gratifying to me. I've had this "problem" with people, for decades. Whether it's conscious on their part or not, I cannot prove (in most cases) obviously. But my GUT tells me, all too often, that they are aware that they are LYING.
So, I used to joke about it and say
"I've given up, long ago, on hoping people will (listen to and) remember what I say--I'd be happy if they'd AT LEAST (*cough*) 'REMEMBER' WHAT THEY SAID...."
I have since purchased a micro-recorder from SONY, (for other purposes, i.e., dictating things I'm writing) but am still teaching myself how to use it. (I think it was under $100.?) For $30., Radioshack can sell you a device (IF you can get them to look for it) that allows you to soundlessly switch on a recorder, during an active phone conversation (you have to set it up first, obviously) that will work with any old cassette recorder. I assume it will also work with the new micro-recorders. (Or you can just use a headset, on another extension, for fair-to-decent quality).
In NYS, for one, believe it or not, it is LEGAL to record a conversation if at least one party is aware that the recording is being made. And guess what? YOU qualify as the "one party." Dumb, I know--but who ever said "the law" is always smart?
I hate to say it, but as I have a "near-photographic memory" for dialogue, as I say,
I have been plagued with this phenomenon of other people not remembering what THEY said, and then, as you say, DENYING WHAT THEY'VE SAID, for years. I actually think recording critical conversations is not as crazy as it sounds.
I "collect" quotations that have personal significance, and here is one by the famous author, Upton Sinclair:
"It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!"
Upton Sinclair
I feel the quote is relevant to people who deny things they've said previously--either they didn't understand it, they don't remember saying it, or they're LY-I-N-G. (I know, it's a "dirty word," but it must be in the dictionary for a reason, right?)
Also, what do you hear when you call Verizon, or your credit card co.? ("Your call may be recorded, for training or quality-control purposes."). I submit to you, based on my experience working in a call center for a majory luxury car importer, that ANY call CAN be recorded, with the push of a button--because I've had to do it, in a few cases, with difficult customers and/or sensitive/legal issues.
So, if the "big boys" are all doing it, and they don't want to stand behind what they say, then why shouldn't we protect ourselves?
Please feel free to share any "coping mechanisms" you've discovered, or developed, to help you deal with this problem of "ours" that is caused by others' (inconveniently?) "bad" memories, i.e.,
"...with people who deny what they say." PM me if that works for you.
Best of luck.
My Hoe
