jk, I think Eddie's granite experience could solve the issues you guys are having. Maybe if you can get your wife to pick it before it is cut, she won't have to weep anymore.

Color and match in the perimeter isn't really an issue with the new slab. We went direct to the slab yards to pick the stone. There are about 10 different yards an hour from us. The granite for the perimeter that we are having issues with is basically identical at all the yards we went to. The new piece will come from the same yard and slabs we already approved. They will also send the original piece back to the yard to verify color match.

The issues have been handled without question at no cost to us. They verified the template and will re-cut. That is part of their service and I would prefer to stay out of verifying their work is correct before cutting. I would worry that if I stepped in and approved the template and cut, then the burden would be shifted to me. Right now all of the responsibility is left with them for getting it right. I'm sure the next piece will go in without issue.

Wow - did they take a new template so they can avoid a round 4?

The re-install for the third slab was today and everything fit perfectly this time. I was also able to get the range hood installed today as well (this turned out to be more difficult than I imagined) It turned out to be a three man job. Tile install is well on its way as well. Wood floors should start on Friday.

We also took Grandpa's Christmas present for the kids to the new house and put it together. No where for it where we currently live so it's been sitting in a box in one of my trailers since Christmas. They had fun today breaking it in.

Not to divert from this awesome build, but check out Eddie home for his parents. It's a great thread too.

Agreed. Very nice build and I enjoyed following it. Well worth the read. Check out tkappeler's build as well.

Tom - as I'm getting close to starting trim work I went back through your build to look at your trim you made. I really like what you did and may have to send credit your way as I may end up copying yours.

Wow, that is an awesome home. My wife and I will be breaking ground this spring when the snow melts and frost line is gone. We have a much smaller budget and will be doing a stick built walkout rambler. I have learned a lot on this thread. We are hoping for geothermal if we can get a good price like yours. I don't have the time or skill set to be the general contractor, nor would the bank let me. But the GC will let us do as much work as we want. I just need to figure out what I am capable of and willing to do. Any suggestions on easier type stuff a homeowner could do?

Just about anything you are capable of doing helps. Painting and staining would be one area. We hired one person to help us paint. By paying one person on an hourly rate along with free labor from myself and wife we were able to paint the house at a fraction of hiring it out. We're doing all of the staining ourselves, cut, stained, and installed all of the tongue and groove with the exception of the great room. Running your own cat5, cable, video, etc is a fairly simple job as well. I did the entire house with one helper in an afternoon. Even electric isn't too bad if you have someone licensed to help with questions. We saved a ton by wiring our own.
