Paint And Method

I was given a homemade rear blade that was basically 100% rusted all over.. I used a 'rust converter' (dont remember the brand) on it, after knocking off any loose rust with a wire brush first.. I only put on 1 coat with a brush - it ended up with a 'crackled' look due to the rust that was painted over.

That blade as been sitting outside for the past 6 yrs and still looks GREAT.. No additional rust and the paint has help up very well.. The color is a red/bergundy color that I dont care for, but never got around to repainting it..

When I got done using it to pretty up a rusty ballast weight for my wife's tractor I had a little left over in the cup, so I brushed it on a roughly 18" square area on an old 55 gal drum - it's held up remarkably well!

I used to like the stuff TSC carried. The valspar tractor and equipment paint. And even before that the BPS paint was good. The new "majic" brand they carry sucks IMO.

But the valspar can still be had. Much better. And mixed with hardener, I have had excellent results as far as finish and durability.i

I've heard a number of people say the Valspar gives good results so I ordered a couple quart cans of their Kubota Orange and some of their red oxide primer, too. Also got a small can of the hardener, based on your comment. It's strange - I looked high and low for a retailer in the area who sells it, but nobody who had any to sell had the color I wanted or even the primer, and nobody seemed willing to order it for me either, so I ended up ordering it thru Amazon. I have a lot of things that need takin' care of and plan to do some painting as soon as it warms up a bit. There's a half built cultipacker in the garage right now that'll look great with some paint after I finish welding the frame together. That'll get painted outside, if I use the hardener.

After hearing too many times that epoxy primer intended for bare metal was the best, I splurged and order a quart... Its only been a year or so, but the trailer wire ramp I finished with that, and Rustoleum enamel on top, looks perfect. The primer was really easy to spray, and dried nicely, seemed tough, etc. I will use it again when I repaint my Kubota's bucket. I have had good luck with rust convertors, too.

Checked out the Valspar colors and found a Kubota orange and a New Kubota orange. Which is
the correct color for a 2002 B7800?
Are you brushing or spraying the primer and finish coat?
If spraying, what type of gun is best?
Is there an advantage to using the Valspar hardener?

I also have to repaint the grey paint on the front axle. Where can I get the correct
grey paint for this?

I have paint chipping off the FEL lower support-that bolts onto the tractor frame.
Can this frame be removed? If so, is it difficult to remove?

I ordered 4432-24 Kubota Orange, which I believe is the old color.
Not really concerned with matching anything in particular.
I'll be spraying both primer and color coats.
Advantage of the hardener remains to be seen - but I plan on using it on some things and not using it on others.

I just use Tremclad primer and paint. I've found that rattle can jobs don't last more then a year... brushed on lasts way, way longer. Barely any difference in the finished product.

Depends how serious you are.... Kubota factory uses urethane paints, IIRC. Tough as nails, but hard to use in any home environment (2-compnonent and require a fair amount of personal protective equipment like respirators and goggles. Most easily found paints are oil-based enamels. They are at best OK. If you buy the Kubota branded paint, it is an acrylic, which is way better. The coverage difference is amazing (I have tried both). On any sharp-ish corners, the enamels pull back and leave it exposed requiring many light coats to cover. The acrylic covers it up in one shot. BIG difference. Then when you step up next into the 2-component urethanes and such, it gets a lot more complex and you need spray equipment and good safety gear. Again..all depends on how serious you want to get...
