Paint And Method

Depends how serious you are.... Kubota factory uses urethane paints, IIRC. Tough as nails, but hard to use in any home environment (2-compnonent and require a fair amount of personal protective equipment like respirators and goggles. Most easily found paints are oil-based enamels. They are at best OK. If you buy the Kubota branded paint, it is an acrylic, which is way better. The coverage difference is amazing (I have tried both). On any sharp-ish corners, the enamels pull back and leave it exposed requiring many light coats to cover. The acrylic covers it up in one shot. BIG difference. Then when you step up next into the 2-component urethanes and such, it gets a lot more complex and you need spray equipment and good safety gear. Again..all depends on how serious you want to get...

If I wanted to touch us smaller areas, can I brush on the acrylic "Kubota branded paint?" This is sold at the Kubota Dealers, am I correct?
Thanks for the good information.

Sure. It won't work as well as sprayed, but it will protect the steel, and look close enough which is generally the primary requirement for tractors...

Powdercoating is some tough stuff. I've sandblasted many thing and anywhere this stuff wasn't chipped or weakend in anyway was NOT coming off with my sandblaster (pressure pot, 30 gal? @ 80-90psi). I was impressed by that alone. If you have the means to get it done paint wouldn't even be an option.

For implement that you really don't care about, you can use anything.

The Tractor supply CRAP called magic is GARBAGE. the OLD Valspar paint they used to carry was GREAT.

But for painting the tractor is self, I recommend the paint from the manufacture. It is PERFECT match Every time.
NOW, with that being said. CNH(case new holland) paint is made by Valspar.

For any tractor worth paint job, I clear coat over the paint. Typically just the tinwork since that is what goes to crap 1st

Interestingly, I just today finish painted my loader bucket... a 2004 LA723 loader, but the inside was pitted- I guess the last owner hauled manure? but otherwise in pretty good shape. I had needle scaled and wire brushed it, cleaned it up, and primed it with two part epoxy primer (I really like that stuff) and I figured the nice weather would last long enough to paint it. I used most of a quart of Kubota paint... it covered nicely when sprayed, but I had tried to brush some on something else, and wouldn't recommend brushing. In fact, the paint says to spray, not brush or roll.

What brand 2 part epoxy primer do you use and is the primer sprayed on, as well?
Do you sand between coats?
What type of spray gun do you use with the Kubota paint?
Thanks-John

This is the primer, which I have used a couple of times, spraying both it and the finish paint with a Harbor Freight HVLP gun, and if I sand (remember, this is farm equipment) I just hit it with 320 paper to knock off any fuzz. One good coat of primer. I had to slightly thin the Kubota paint to get good flow- maybe less than 10%? I used lacquer thinner, but xylene is recommended. Didn't have any. I do use an in-line dryer, because it has been humid here. For "big" jobs, you'll need a fair amount of air capacity, or patience. By the way, there is some useful info on using the HF HVLP gun on the internet, in terms of setting it up, etc. I am happy with it, especially for the cost.

Custom Shop KIT-KEP505-QT Gray DTM Epoxy Prime/Sealr-Kit 2.1 VOC from Amazon. Eastwood also sells good primer. This was around $45 delivered, but it covers really well.

I have used Dupot products for years. But when I moved to my current location PPG was more readily accessible. And I LOVE it. I don't ever want to go back to dupont again.
But for tract paints, I buy straight from the dealer. It is a PERFECT color match every time. And I use PPG primer.
I typically use a syphon gun to do the prime and a HVLP Iwata gun to do color and clear

First thing I need to do is paint some pieces of wood Kubota orange.

Can I brush the Kubota acrylic paint onto wood or should I use the Valspar on wood?

Will the Valspar hardener be of any benefit for painting wood?

Brushing- I don't think you'd be happy with the results using the Kubota paint. Try the Valspar. Or, a rattle can?
