Nice! How much did the trusses set you back? Depending on how much family stuff we have going on for Easter I may get to digging the footings and grading... I'll be using crushed concrete for fill/base in and around the barn but I'm having trouble finding it. Seems its gotten so popular as a road base the quarries are sending the finished product out faster then they're getting raw demo concrete in these days.

It could just be up to local codes whether a slab could be floated without footings. The linked project with tubes would meet MI codes easily. Here we must go 48" down to pucks or pads and 4x6s are common on buildings of this size when not made movable as a really small shed would be. The alternative (here) might be a full footing to frost depth. (What some do is pour after passing with pads/pillars/posts.)

As to gravel flooring, I've see even 8-9 stone that was very stable (under a CUT, at least), could be touched up to level easily with an inverted garden rake, laughed at spills/leaks, and was fine to walk/stand on once old rugs were positioned in work areas. (Not bad, IMO.)

Having said that, some folks like to have wheels on tool boxes, service carts, and work tables, adding to the trend to later slab pours. (btw, 'G' moved his stone out to make approaches for the slab and blended the rest onto the grade surrounding the whole shazoo, does the 'chemical trim' to 3-4' out, and his mower glides around with no trimming ever. Vermin will get into any & every building, and among them are groundhogs. Not hard to spot a fresh hole in tidy gravel, tho'. :) )

I wonder if the OP could pour sections (4-6?) some time after starting with a gravel base. Grade beams wouldn't confound this in any way I can imagine, other than I might stake 'em between posts when pouring. btw, great plan so far, IMO.

I should have added that I also have a 12' x 24' attached garage with a concrete floor. Right now its packed full of OPE and other stuff, so it's really not usable as a work space. The plan is to move the equipment and storage items out to the barn and keep most of the tools in the attached garage. That way I can just pull whatever needs an oil change or other work requiring me to be on the floor, using jacks and jackstands, etc...into the attached garage which will have plenty of space once the barn is built.

WOW! Great link! I had designed my roof in Sketchup by drawing a half circle between the top plates and simply drawing chords along the circle. I had toyed with the idea of changing the angles in order to maximize headroom up top though, so I'll play with this a bit.

I'll follow ye thread, IH. I'm always interested in this slab vs. pier debate. I'm needing a new bigger barn, and not wanting to go slab either due to cost.

Oh, boys, what in the world is/are OPE?

Outdoor Power Equipment-a short way of saying, the lawn mower, lawn tractor, generator, log splitter, chainsaws, weedeater, power washer, leaf blower, chipper/shredder, snow blower, etc... As you can imagine, with all of that stuff parked in my current garage there isn't much floor space left to work with.
