When I start my J/D GT245 the the mower blades under the deck start operating. They continue to run weather the PTO switch is on or off. I was mowing a couple of days ago, went to cut the PTO off and the mower blades continued to run. Before that everything ran normal. Any help in solving this probem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If it has the electric clutch, look for a bad ground, frayed wire, ect. If it is a Manuel engagement, rusted slides and pulleys might be the culprit.

Could also be the bearing in the electric clutch binding up or something that got into the electric clutch between the plates and is jamming it up.

You also have a safety switch problem. If all the safeties are working, you wouldn't be able to get out of the seat, crank the engine etc with the mower drive engaged

Probably a bearing has seized in the electric clutch. You need to remove the clutch assembly from the unit for examination. One quick way to check the clutch is by setting in the seat, place every thing where it needs to be to start. Without starting the engine turn the switch to the run position. Activate or cycle the deck switch on and off. You should hear a distinct clicking noise when the clutch engages or disengages.

The bearing can be replaced in some clutches if you are careful with removal. A bearing sales location can cross reference the numbers for you.

If the bearing is not replaceable, hold onto the JD parts counter when the Parts Person gives you the replacement cost for the complete unit.

If the clutch was seized, could the mower show that the blades were disengaged while the clutch remained connected? On my mower (not a JD, mind you), the safety switch is on the lever that engages the pully, but if the pully were stuck somehow, the lever could be in the "disengaged" position while the blades were still turning.

Thats how the JD240 I had was.

So I dont think there is a safety switch issue. If the switch is in the off position, but something is mechanically causing the clutch to stay engaged, the mower dont know that. All it knows is that it killed power to the clutch and the blades should be stopped.

When the bearing seizes in a clutch assembly it locks the clutch into a direct drive mode. Same as hooking the mower drive belt directly to the crankshaft. Nothing to disengage, the clutch is engaged all the time.

Another test that you can do to narrow it down is to unplug the electrical connector from the clutch. Of course, do this with the engine off! Move the wires to a safe location then sit on tractor & start it up. If the mower still runs, it's not an electrical problem!

I unpluged the wire from the clutch and started the engine. The blades still engage with the wire off. Does this mean the clutch is broken?

Most likely, or like others have said, something is binding the plates together. Or has broken the return springs.

-Now if you said 'Mower Blades will not turn off when engine is not running', then you should probably get a priest.

View attachment 370987 Air gap may be too narrow between plates, some can be adjusted.

I was going to suggest that if he had just worked on it or changed the clutch. But since it was working fine before, and now has issues, I dont think it is the air gap. Typically as it wears out, the air gap has to be adjusted tighter to compensate or you have issues NOT engaging.

True. Seems like the problem is the clutch, for sure. Either broken, rusted, gummed up or has something jammed in between the clutch magnet and the driven plate. If you can't see anything wrong, then take it off and see what doesn't spin.

Yep - can't hurt it now.... take it off and dissect. Worst case, you'll learn something & have to buy a clutch. Best case (hopefully!) is that you'll figure out what's binding and be able to resolve it. This message will self destr... ooh, never mind, that's another forum!

i keep thinking of some tractors that have clutches that stick if left in storage with
the clutch engaged. i wonder if the mower was shut off with the PTO engaged, and
has sat for winter, and then being in contact the clutch plate and clutch material rusted
together.
i can't say for sure, but in a tractor like this, if the pto is left engaged while the tractor
shuts down, does the clutch stay engaged until it gets power again? or would the
clutch disengage with the key being turned off? i know on some tractors you can
engage the clutch without starting the tractor, it's a distinct sound if you cycle the pto
switch while the key is on.

I will pull the clutch off today, to see if if I can find out what the culprit is.

After reading all of the great advice, I am going to pull the pto clutch off my J/D, check it out or replace it. Does anyone know how to remove it and reinstall. Thanks torgep22

Locate and disconnect the power supply cord from the clutch. Remove the bolt, washer and retainer from the center of the clutch, It should now slide off the end of the crankshaft provided you have previously removed anything such as body parts or braces that would be in the way. In some instances penetrating oil must be used to help free it up. When you reassemble it, it is a good idea to use a little bit of anti-seize on the engine shaft in case you have to remove it in the future.
