I don't know how you guys do it. I see a 4 inch snake up here in Maine and I scream like a little girl.

Small can put the hurt on you also. My neighbor already got bit by a "small" copperhead last month as he was turning his water on at the meter. His hand swelled up to the shoulder. he was bit on a Friday and was back at work on Monday - but hurting pretty bad for a week.

What is 'snakeshot'?

Metalic Cartridge Reloaders will often make up "snake loads" for handguns. Typically #12 shot. CCI makes small plastic capsules for this purpose, but other methods are also employed. Also factory made loads are available for some calibers. The effective range of these loads are pretty short, but then again, if Mr. "fangy" is out there a ways, you probably don't need to mess with him.

I guess it depends on the individual and maybe how exposed to them a person is. I grew up and live in the country where they are common, so I guess I am just use to them. Now my sons pick them up, take pictures etc.; had a really pretty banded King Snake by our house recently, no way am I going to handle any snake.

What, no Coral snakes in Missouri?

Apparently not, the banded Scarlet King Snakes sure looks like them.

"Remember these rhymes to tell the difference between the two snakes:"

Red touches yellow, kills a fellow. Red touches black, friend of Jack.
Red touches yellow, kills a fellow. Red touches black, venom lack.
Red touches yellow, death says hello. Black touches red, keep your head.
Yellow touches red, you be dead. Red touches black, eat Cracker Jacks.

You must turn in your "man card"

Lets not be to harsh on our northern Yankee friend, you must remember that they don't see a lot of snakes up there. We are more used to seeing something slithering around than they are.:D Although I will have to admit screaming like a little girl does seem a bit reactive!

We have a neighbor about a half mile down the road that bought an old cabin a couple of years ago. They live in the beach area near LA and come up here every once in a while. About a week ago they call me a say there is a Diamondback in their yard. They ask what to do?

I ask if the head is still connected... They say yes. I tell them to disconnect it!

I'm so use to doing I don't even give it a second thought but it probably was bad advise to a flatlander. Anyway they survived the experience.

Diamondbacks are common out here so we actually took our Golden to snake avoidance training. She will not go near any snake and warns us when one is near.

Hey, this is my thousanth post! :cool2:

I guess we are lucky. There is only one poisonous snake in Ea WA - prairie rattlesnake also called western rattlesnake. Been here 32 years and never seen one on my property. There are local folk stories as to why no snakes around here but I take that with a grain of salt.
