I probably would have given them a hard time about it in a humorous way, something like "does the Hoover Dam supply line run directly to this outlet" or similar. Basically, to break the ice and bring it up. Then follow up with "you're lucky the house hasn't burned down yet". After that, it's their move.

Being a do-it-yourselfer I hooked up our first gas dryer to a plastic vent tube not realizing I had no idea it was against code to do so AND dangerous. This in a new home.8 years later the appliance repairman comes by to fix another problem and noticed it. He simply took it apart and told me what a fire hazard it was.I was happy he fixed it with the proper metal ducting.Fred, still here and didn't burn up in my sleep!
Maybe a good thing you hadn't added a turbo huh Fred??? Heheheheheh.... :)

Over the weekend I attended a dinner at a distant (both mileage wise and relations wise) relatives house, and while there I observed one of those classic safety hazards: An duplex electrical outlet (2 prong type) that had about 14 different things plugged into it, lights, phone chargers, tv set and related gear, most running off extension cords and cube taps and all the things we are warned not to do so the circuit doesn't overload.

Now, had you been in my place, would you have said anything to the young couple that own the house about the safety hazard that presents? I decided not to, but wonder if I should have. Thanks for your input.

There is nothing inherently unsafe about having a multiplicity of appliances connected to one receptacle. Two appliances can have as much or more load than the "octopus" they had.

What I definitely would be concerned about is the extension cords if they have their extra length coiled up and especially if they are ran under rugs and whether the spring loaded jaws of the receptacle have lost tension...situations which can cause overheating and might cause a fire.

As to your question, I would have informed them of the hazards.

OK...well, things are never simple, are they

Seeing our very friendly cat, she asked if he was micro-chipped ...nope, he roams 200 acres at will, ....

Forget the chip - I just hope he is neutered!

I would hve voiced my concerns quickly and directly to whomever I felt was responsible.
My actions would have been selfish, as they were an act that would allow me to sleep a little better.
If those comments were offensive to some ....so be it.

I know what my intentions were.

That is exactly how I would have handled it. It's a lot tougher to do something like this after the fact. When you say something face to face you get to see their reaction and let the conversation change as needed. I've learned that you should NEVER assume that someone knows something that "everyone knows." I'd rather someone be irritated with me for pointing out the obvious than say nothing assuming they already know.

Excellent advice. Ask them if they ever saw national lampoons Christmas vacation, Clark had the outlets loaded up.

Ding ding ding, we have a winner, IMHO.
Now that's a great line. Gets your point across with humor.

That moment in the movie where he plugged in the last connection to turn all those lights on and the camera cut to the electric meter spinning around like it was turbocharged...one of the funniest things I ever saw on a big screen....
