The problem with corn alcohol is that it takes 8 units to make 9 units of energy. Brazil makes alcohol from sugar cane which takes 1 unit to get 8 units of energy. Big difference. Farmers like corn based alcohol for obvious reason. I have several friends that are large scale farmers. One of them told me that before ethanol fuel mandate there were many instances when the more they planted the more money farmers lost.

Why push nuke, there is lots of oil and gas for thousands of years to come. It's the all natural fuel.

Former NASA Scientist: Global Warming is Nonsense

Chew on this. HS

Why not push nuclear? smaller footprint, more jobs, the energy stays in America and not shipped to foreign lands, and a bigger bang for the buck. Oil and gas are for cars, nukes are for the grid and the leaf, which is the topic of this thread.

So I took your bait, now you can tell me how wrong I am, and twist it back to oil and gas, but really, only a troll would do that, right?

I was thinking small scale individual use. Have seen advertisement for building the equipment, but was also told that the engine would have to have some alteration, and that the alcohol is too corrosive. Hard to know what to believe.

To keep this in perspective:

Climate Change: Consensus
Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities, and most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position. The following is a partial list of these organizations, along with links to their published statements and a selection of related resources.

So the fact that one scientist disagrees is not really news.

Ohh Dear .. I will probably get yelled at for this , but I drive a Prius and have done now for over 8 years .. ( I gave the 1st one to my wife at 250,000 klm and bought myself another one ! ) Prior to Prius ownership, We drove Toyota Prados for the previous 5 cars over a 12 year period.
Prado was big and comfortable but i just couldn't stand pulling up to a service station ( gas station) and throwing $ 200 down a tube.. I drive up to 800 to 1000 klm a week here in Sydney traffic for my work and needed to get some costs under control. Brought my weekly fuel bill between the two cars from $ 300 a week , to $ 65 a week!.. So over the last 8 years , thats close to $ 10,000 a year saving!!!
OK.. the Prius isn't as Big or imposing as the Prado's but I can stomach the embarrassment each time I fill them up!.. I didn't buy them to save the planet.. I bought them to save my pocket!
Mechanically they drive like any 2 litre car.. so they arent rockets.. but they are dirt cheap to run! and us farmers LOVE the Dirt!
Cheers
Bob

Goes the other way for me. My wife gets the new car and I drive the old ones.

So dose anybody know the cost per mile for a leaf? Has anybody metered their charge station?
My wifes v6 awd fusion costs $0.17 per mile.
My 13 v6 ecoboost f-150 gets $0.21 per mile with 365hp and 575 miles between fillups.
my power company runs on coal, so charged at my house, the leaf prolly has worse emissions than the truck!

fukushima, chernobyl, not worth the risk, not necessary to take the risk. HS

Assuming 65% efficiency of the coal burnig power station and 65% efficiecy charging the battery the total efficency of Leaf is about 42%. Your truck engine is about 30% at best. Leaf is also way smaller car than your truck so considering that your truck polutes at least twice the amount than Leaf.

Alcohol burns differently than pure gasoline, so a properly set up engine would compensate for that - not really that hard to do (at the OEM level), with modern engine computers.

The original major problems that were recognized back in the pre-EFI days were seal and fuel line incompatibility (ex. alcohol rotting high rubber content lines). The material science around using alcohol is well understood now, as E85 production engines have been around for a number of years.
