Motorola Talkabout handheld radios for the farm.

Anyone put old fashion CB in the tractor and base station at house. I have been looking at that idea vs using sporting type FM radios. HS

It depends on where we are in the sunspot cycle Houston. CB is 27MHZ, and therefore is in the HF spectrum, and somtimes, supports long distance communications. Think about it. 40 channels for the entire world, with millions of users, and propogation supporting communications... gets a bit crowded..:D

Got a full charge and just tried the radios out. I went around our 150 acres and it looks like it's just the right amount of coverage for what I was looking for. Came in nice and clear with just the low output transmit ptt button. Supposedly the high output ptt gives a little more range. These were just what I was looking and much better than the inconvenience of my cell phone.

I'm thinking it was $65.00 well spent. I have been on the fence for quite a while, glad I bit the bullet.

So your 150 acres, would be about 1/2 mile square?, so maximum distance would be something like 3/4 mile across it diagonally (approximately)

Good question, never broke it down that way before, sounds about right though.

Went down the street from the house in my truck, got just about a mile away and it was unreadable. Hey, as long as it works on the farm, I'm happy. It should also work out pretty good going to fairs, tractor pulls etc over the summer/fall, as well as any other outings we go on, with no worries about cell coverage.

I got a couple of the Motorola units a couple of years ago and they work OK. There not good when I'm on the tractor with the shredder running full blast, but they work on our place. I have, however, used them when my son is out hunting or for communicating from down in the basement and trying to shut down a circuit breaker upstairs. Makes finding the right breaker real fast.

The grandkids found them one time when they were over and Nona said they could play with them........now if they're coming over I hide the walkie -talkies.

This thread reminded me that I have a set. I bought them before my wife and I moved across country last time. I was in my truck, pulling the cargo trailer, and she was in her SUV with the dogs. We could stay within about a mile of each other (roughly) and still be able to talk...made picking rest stops, etc a lot easier. I dusted them off yesterday because there are a lot of times when I'm in the barn, or on the other side of the property, and she's trying to find me....these will help with that.

I can see them coming in very handy.

I used the VOX feature to tune my TV satellite dish...I could not hear the signal strength monitor from the dish location...so I used one handheld set to VOX (voice activated) and set it next to the TV/receiver...worked great...!
