... C-47 ...[=DC-3] ... As they were crossing the English Channel he said he got to look out a window and below him he could see ferry boats passing them.
I believe it if they had a lot of headwind. I think DC-3's maximum is only 160~180mph, with efficient cruise considerably less.

On the cargo flight I described and generally along the spine of the Andes, the DC-3's traveled through mountain passes. Sometimes alongside steep farms that were higher than the aircraft! I don't recall if we were close enough to see a farmer wave, but I think we only had a couple thousand feet clearance over some of the passes. Ipiales airport is at 9,700 ft and the international airport in Quito in the middle of town was 9,400ft, until they opened a new airport at 'only' 8,400 ft. The surrounding mountains are much higher. The Andean region is fascinating.

...I do my best to stay the _____ away from those coil loads on the road, they scare me silly.

Rgds, D.

From now on, I sure will too! I had no idea of the (obviously very real) risk.

If they are copper rolls, I'd have my roof for my log home taken care of.

What is scary is what is in box trucks sometimes. I have seen large items like tractors and concrete peers shipped with no secure system. No way those paper thin walls will hold anything in.

The whopper of Hauling Something Wrong has to be the MV_Sewol recently. (Korean Ferry).

Cargo was loaded to more than triple its maximum capacity. Not tied down properly. And a whole floor of staterooms had been added last year, 180 tons of new weight three stores above the waterline.

To oversimplify -they made a sharp turn, the cargo shifted, and it fell over.

I have noticed when guys deliver stuff that nothing is tied down in the truck. Something even like a pallet jack would be a projectile at 55MPH.

I came across this picture I had taken a few years ago, I thought y'all would find amusing, while at the boat ramp, The water level was down several feet, Folks were having a difficult time launching their boats, This Escalade pulls up towing a 3 seater jet-ski ,one man unhooked the ski from it's trailer and climbs on to set on the ski as if he didn't want to get wet:confused:, the driver of the Escalade starts backing down into the water.... and keeps backing down.... and down... Until the bottom portion of the Escalade was fully emerged, The driver crawls out and yells to the man on the ski, "I waited for you to tell me when to stop" Ha! I thought to myself doesn't this person know when he should stop.. Heh!-heh! :D

after looking back at the situation I began to think.... Hmmmm! These two men could have easily slid the ski off the trailer on into the water, .... Oh! but they didn't want to get wet:cool: I still, when thinking about seein that,
