I could just cry.. I used to check the welding thread every day but haven't for about a month.. :bawling:

Not much to say. It is a scratch start only setup. This is a stick welder. We have a video up on how to make your welder into a TIG welder on youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mzJSnqhZDg

Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eH7M9KkJYk

Good video's, Mark. I've never done TIG but I guess a person's never too old to learn. :)

I have a dumb question.
If I decide I would like to tig aluminum, could I easily swap everything over to the old Thunderbolt AC every now and then, and use it to do aluminum?
I have a roll around cart and could put the Thunderbolt on a shelf below the PA300. I would have to figure out a way to hook it up. Perhaps like you show in the video, by just clamping to the Dinse connector.

You can weld aluminum on an AC stick welder, but you need an external high-freq box. Transformer welders have (roughly) sine wave output, and need continuous HF to keep the arc going through the 0v transitions. Since DC welding has no 0v transitions, you can DC TIG scratch-start on any stick welder without the HF box.

BTW, if you are just dying to try aluminum on your existing machine, it is possible to weld aluminum on DC with a Helium gas mix. That being said, I don't know if scratch-start on Al is a good idea, since it may contaminate the weld.

I have an older model...at a good price. It's my personal unit. You are close enough to me to come get it

Joshua indeed answered the question as good as I can. You can buy an older HF box, but honestly it is a very inefficient way of doing things...

Thanks, Josh!
I thought I was leaving something out of the equation. :)

Does any make (or use) and extension cable for the welding cables. Thinking a male and female connector on a cable, plug the found clamp into it then that cable to the welder, etc. Sort of an extension cord idea - is that safe and/or possible?
thanks
