Do you guys all sharpen your chains?

I've never tried sharpening so I send it out.

If you do not let them get bad you can get them as good as new in 5 minutes with a hand file and guide. Rock the chain and keep abusing he chain after that and it can take an hour to bring a chain back to life with a file.

I've heard about the Harbor Freight sharpener... can it do the job?

I've heard about the Harbor Freight sharpener... can it do the job?

I've used the Harbor Freight sharpener for a couple of seasons now. It's a flimsy thing, and it sorta works, but it has several draw backs, at least in my amateur opinion. You see, I've never used anything else, not even a hand file, to sharpen chains.

The first challenge you'll face with the HF sharpener is getting the teeth to space the same for each grind. Even on a never sharpened chain, there always seems to be a few teeth that take a heavy cut to sharpen and others that barely get grazed. I use Stihl chains only, and I can't believe that there's that much variation in what many consider to be the best out there. The next problem is that when you take a heavy cut, the metal in the tooth over heats and softens, so even though it's sharp it won't stay that way for long. Lately I've been setting the little gauge so that the grinding wheel just misses the end of the tooth so that I can flex the head over and just kiss the tooth with the wheel. Not the best for repeatability, but much better than the hit and miss that happens with the little gauge.

The HF sharpener is a classic case of you get what you pay for. It'll make sparks and act like it's sharpening the chain, but in the end I find it's just better to buy a good chain to start with, keep it out of the dirt, and replace it with a new one when it gets dull. I keep those old chains, because someday I'll spring for one of the professional grade sharpeners. But for now I can get almost a cord of wood cutting out of one chain and that's good enough for me.

I went to use my new spare chain and found it was mismarked... I have an 18 inch and the chain marked 18 on the box is for a 16"

I'm sure the Dealer will make it right... I've traded their for many years.

They sell and service lawn and garden equipment... Mom, Pop and Daughter.

I've used Stihl & Oregon chain for 35 years. Been on a Stihl kick for the last few years, but am liking Oregon better lately.

In .325 I like BPX semi chisel. In 3/8 I like DP semi chisel, or LPX chisel.

Hand filed I like much better than ground & it cuts faster for me. Oregon cuts faster for me also.

Semi chisel stays sharp much longer in hard wood for me & is just as fast after a filling.

I'm asking because even with a new chain my saws never cut like they do on TV ;-)

New chains arent as sharp as they can be filed. And how well a chain is sharpened has more to do with how it cuts than what brand chain you are running. Even the lower end chains cut well when sharp. The difference in brands is just how long they last between sharpenings.

Personally I like to file with a granberg jig. I dont like grinders

Yes LD1, I do agree. Hand filled just cuts better.

The ms250 isn't really an impressive cutting saw to begin with. ;)

I wouldn't buy anything from Harbor Freight!

Do yourself a favor and learn to sharpen with a file...

I bought the MS 250 easy start because of arthritis in my knuckles... years of pulling rope starters finally caught up with me.

Mentioned Harbor Freight because I buy my tow chain there and the clerk said they sell a lot of the low end sharpeners.

Will look up granberg jig...
