Nightmare senario...lost my oil plug and oil

I'd trade it in this week.

Ahh yup. How well and how long do you think you would run without any blood. Two things at work here, low volume and then no pressure.

Oil does a great many things in your engine besides keeping things slippy. It also cools your engine, so dimes to doughnuts this engine got HOT. Then as its last few drips slipped away it had no oil pressure. This is about the worst thing you can do to an engine.

I really would trade it....as in I would take a day off work to get rid of the thing.....I really feel for the guy that buys this machine.

Never EVER use those rubber thingies.....some things you can go cheap on, others you can't....you just found one you can't cheap out on.

Follow the trail, it will not be hard....how long and far did it run with oil pouring out of it?

Perhaps you can buy a reconditioned engine and get a core credit for your old engine?
I might be tempted to use the current engine until it gives up the ghost, which could happen suddenly, as in throwing a rod. No way to predict.

Kubota insurance by any chance? Don't know if this would be covered but worth a look.

Don't trade it in. Just think if you where the guy with the family just getting by and you buy this "damaged" tractor without knowing it and about a week later it dies on you or worse someone gets injured when things go boom...

You may want to change the oil filter cut the old filter apart and see if there is any metal in it.

A big YES on this idea! I cut most of my equipment filters apart anyways.

I put one of those rubber plugs in because I stripped my oil drain bolt....and blew the plug out. Lost my oil, the tractor started running funny and stalled. This was after probably about I would guess from tracking the oil trail, about 3 or 4 minutes without oil. I will have to put the stripped bolt back in and replace the oil to see what the damage is. Do you think I wrecked my engine? Thanks Brad
The engine didn't run without oil all the time it was draining. It likely took about a minute for all the oil to drain so some oil was still circulating until the level got too low for the sump pump to pick it up.
Surely you did some damage or at least extra wear to the engine, but if it isn't knocking or making any funny noise, I doubt that you caused damage severe enough to cause immediate or near future catastrophic failure. The rod bearings would likely be the first to go and the piston rings. Keep an eye on the oil usage and if it is not using any oil, the rings must be ok. If rod bearings, it will develop a knock and even a low sounding knock is time to shut it down and overhaul it before you throw a rod thru the block.
I don't know if your engine has hydraulic lifters but if so, they are likely the cause for shutdown due to lack of oil and perhaps they shut down prior to any major damage happening.

I'm glad the pan on my RTV900 is made from steel. I checked the owners manual and service manual and never did find the torque spec for the drain plug.

Disagree, ask yourself one question, would you pay going market price for this machine.

And it will run just fine with not a drop of oil in it....the lifters will work just fine.

IMHO not good advice in this post at all, and I bet I have blown up more engines (Drag racing, then road racing) then any of you I would bet. You are going to destroy the cam, cam bearings, rod bearings, mains, rockers, pushrods, pistons....the list goes on and on. Think about it, how long do you think it takes to toast a bearing....a blink of an eye, I have seen pistons with no ring groves left that got shut down the sec the pressure went to nothing and the light went on. Yes it was wound a little tighter then 3k of our tractors, but the point is it takes no time at all....we will not get into the heat issue at all here.

I do agree that trading it off is bad karma, bad juju, negative vibes man....whatever. But I would be VERY leery on that motor. But I do think there are two ways to play this. Run it till it dies, or unload it. I doubt if you tell the dealer they will give you a good price on the tractor but your mind will be clear in that you did the right thing.

If you do keep it however I would change the oil at about 3-5 hours, little engines don't hold that much. I would do a pure synthetic and perhaps a tad more heavy weight oil.

Good luck to you.

My two bits, did not mean to tick anyone off with all this.

May we have the tractor serial number so it may be logged as one not to buy

No, the BX engines are not like the cheap generator engines that will run out of oil in less then 24 hours and need a low oil shutdown switch, if the tractor shut down on its own there is a need to worry.

It is great that Kubota has enabled many people to have their own tractor even though they should not because they are not mechanically inclined. An expansion oil plug is not an appropriate fix for a stripped oil plug.
Over Size and Repair Oil Drain Plugs

The expansion plug was a bad idea, but in fairness to the OP, none of the plugs on that page would fit. My sources show the D905E engine as having a massive 22x1.5 drain plug. A bit more of a rare beast!
