At the end of the day, the $2400 quote for the BB720X was a misquote by a sales person. He meant that was his quote for a BB72X. Sigh.

I really wanted the Brown 2505C tree cutter and felt the $5900 price would be well spent, but couldn't confirm that it would work on a CUT even if I had enough PTO power. I also would have liked the heavier Woods 6000 series rotary cutter but felt that a cutter closer to the width of the tractor would be easier to actually use.

Anyway, I wound up ordering a Woods BB720X, which is rated at being able to cut 3" material and can run with a 40 hp PTO or higher. The dealer (who has the lighter weight BB72X in stock) gave me some pushback about mounting such a heavy rotary (1200 pounds and 9.66' long) on a CUT. I asked how much does the CUT need to weigh and really didn't get an answer.

FWIW, I will use the BB720X with a Kioti NX6010 cab on tractor which weights 4600 pounds, and will have a total ballast of 1550 pounds of rim guard in all four tires. Without the loader, the tractor's ballasted weight will be 6150 pounds. Adding the loader in at an estimated 1000 pounds, and the tractor will be at 7150 pounds. After watching videos of Kioti's huffing around round bales, I thought the tractor should be able to handle the 1200 pound weight of the Woods BB720X. Am I wrong?

Also, the final price of the BB720X with the front and rear chain kits is $3085.00.

Eric,
Have you used the BB720 yet? You'll be fine with the Kioti. I use the same size mower on a smaller Kubota L series, ballasted as well to a similar weight. I don't think you'll "need" to keep the FEL mounted if your on flat ground, but I think steering will be VERY light, and any hills may just give you a little bit of airtime if your cresting them. If you have any hills, I'd definitely keep the FEL on for weight.

I can use my 1300lb rotary cutter on my tractor without the FEL if I'm on very flat ground. I only do this when in tight woods for manueverability, I almost always keep the loader on. It's very marginal without it though, as I can get the front wheels a couple inches off the ground just by pressing the HST pedal forward rather fast, so unless I have to have the shorter length of the tractor without the FEL, I always keep it on.

When mowing without the FEL, I typically always put my top link in "float" position (hydraulic top link) and use it as a semi mount.

The major consideration with this heavy of a mower, is the stress on the top link connection on the tractor. Be sure to be very careful about driving over bumps at any speed whatsoever if the mower is raised in the air! If it bounces up off a bump, it sends a massive jolting force to the top link connection on your tractor. I never keep my mower on unless I'm actually mowing if I'm on anything but smooth property. You probably don't have to worry about this as much as I do, since I have a smaller tractor, but it's just something to keep in mind.

It's amazing what these heavy duty mowers can do, I went from a light duty mower, to a heavy duty mower (I think it's actually classed as a true medium duty mower) and this one should last me a lifetime. I destroyed my other one in only a handful of uses.

Congrats on the purchase of a VERY nice mower

I'd like to see a pic of your setup once you get it all hooked up.

I run a Brown 5' tree cutter on my Deere 4720. It handles it fine, start up of the 600 lb stump jumper lowers the rpms but it does it. I back into the trees over 3" and drive over them under that. The biggest tree I ever cut was a 8" sweet gum. It leaves rough slash everywhere and you will need a cage for your cab glass. The brown will not cut grass. I then recut the slash with a bush hog model 306. My first mower was Woods 600 and it is a great mower.

Turkeyman,
I'd love to see some pics of your setup? I have a Brown rotary cutter (not tree cutter) and dream of a tree cutter, but my measly little 40pto hp just won't cut it. Love the Brown units though!

Thanks for the info Matt and Turkeyman.

Matt, sadly, as of yet my tractor hasn't left the dealer's lot because the dealer is still waiting for the spool valves for the rear remotes.

Maddening.

Anyway, I think the BB720X is "in" at the different from tractor dealer. I've got a 20' trailer to chase off and pick it up but 200 mile north where the cutter will live, I'll need to make friends with my new neighbor Bill who has a 38" Bobcat tractor to unload it from my trailer. That or a tree, a come-along connected to the cutter while i drive the trailer out from under it.

The southern end is flat where I shot the video below. The middle of the lot is impenetrable and a 1/4 mile of bushwhacking to the northwest and eventually leads to a point with water on the south, north and west sides. A little more than a 1/4 mile to the north has a gradual hill perfect for walk-out basement lots with good southwesterly lake views. My ultimate plan is clear, build, and to subdivide. The basic clearing plan is to cut trails all over and then expand those trails until what we want to clear is cleared. In four days of basically working by hand (Stihl brush cutter, chainsaw, M28 Sawzall, and my Toro Z4235) I've followed my property line to the lake on the southern end and hacked a mowed trail to my northeastern corner marker.

Here is a video I made last weekend. Bummer that I still do not have the tractor to work with.

I was just looking back at this thread to see if you got your tractor/cutter in yet, and noticed that I forgot to mention something about the BB72 that the dealer had in stock. You would absolutely OBLITERATE that mower within the first couple of uses if you are doing anything even remotely close to what you would be using a heavy duty mower for. It is a darn good thing you didn't waste all your money on it. I had the same mower, and I trashed it in only a few uses with my 40pto hp. That is the reason I ended up with the Brown 472 mower.

Good to know. I didn't go with the heaviest Woods cutter because like the Brown 2505C, I couldn't confirm if it would work with a 50ish PTO hp machine that had a ballasted weight of 6100 pounds. Too bad too because I can get a sweet deal of the Brown.

The tractor is still not ready but a couple hundred miles driving around southern Minnesota today and I have all the attachments that I've ordered so far loaded on my new PJ trailer ready to chase up to northern Minnesota.

Congrats on some really nice equipment. That mower will last a lifetime.

I'm eager to get the tractor on site, hook up the quick hitch and hook up the Woods cutter, size the driveshaft and give it a whirl. I presume the starting method is to engage the PTO at a lower rpm, spin the deck up to engine speed and then increase engine speed to PTO power as the easiest on the tractor's PTO system. If not, clue me in!
